Abstract: This sub-group is composed of a variety of materials related to News Services' work promoting North Carolina State University. The textual records include news releases, clippings, correspondence, university reports, university publications, and files and press information on faculty. The records also contain a number of audio-visual formats, including audio cassettes, data CDs, computer disks (both 5 1/2 inch and 3 1/4 inch formats), slides, and color and black-and-white photographs. Also included are video cassettes of various types documenting broadcasts, press conferences, public service announcements and other media presentations. The materials date from the 1950s to 2007, with the bulk from 1980 to 2005.

Abstract: Black-and-white and color photographic prints, negatives, contact prints and sheets, printing plates, and reprographic copies of images picturing individuals and small groups of people who have contributed to the history of North Carolina State University. Pictures of administrators, faculty, staff, students, and notable visitors and alumni are included, as well as class pictures. Most of the materials were created to portray a specific individual or small group of people: many are posed and have subject identification on the reverse. The materials date from the 1890s to the late 20th century.

Abstract: The Ralph Leland Cope Papers consists of materials for an Engineering 100 course at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). Included are official letters, as well as quizzes, assignments, a School of Engineering placement report, and various articles about academic and professional development. Also included are materials related to freshman orientation, student advising, aptitude tests and scoring, and the industrial engineering curriculum. The materials date from between 1949 and 1955.

Abstract: The bulk of this records subgroup consists of black-and-white photographic prints that document the history of North Carolina State University’s physical campus and facilities from 1889 to the 1990s, but it also contains related color prints, negatives, contact prints, and contact sheets. The images show interior and exterior views of buildings, outdoor facilities and constructed items, general campus views, views of the surrounding area, and aerial photographs. In addition, the photographs in this subgroup illustrate people, events, and activities related to the facilities and areas of campus they picture. This includes construction, renovations, beautification projects, groundbreakings, and dedication ceremonies. Some images demonstrate damage to or destruction of buildings, architectural and decorative details, and the moving of departments or items from one building to another. This subgroup also contains photographic copies of three-dimensional architectural models, architectural plans, artists renderings, sketches, floor plans, and maps

Abstract: This collection chiefly documents Ralph Clay Swann's work as Technical Director at the Redstone Arsenal Ordnance Missile Laboratories in Huntsville, Alabama, where he was responsible for the planning and execution of rocket propulsion research and solid propulsion development. Contained in the files are news clippings, photographs, certificates, citations, lectures and speeches given by Swann. A few items relate to Swann's education, to his work in private industry, or to his work at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University).

Abstract: The Walter Clyburn Taylor Papers consists of papers relating to textiles and their manufacture. These papers represent Taylor’s work for both his sophomore course on carding and spinning and for courses taken during his junior year at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University). Included are handwritten and typewritten essays on a variety of subjects. Also present are tables of mechanical settings and several technical drawings for machinery, as well as articles clipped from technical journals and affixed onto pages of the notebook. All the materials in the notebook date from between 1911 and 1912.

Abstract: As a land-grant institution, North Carolina State University has had agricultural study as an integral part of instruction since its beginning in 1887. In 1917, the first dean of agriculture took office, and the School of Agriculture was established in 1923. The name was changed to School of Agriculture and Life Sciences in 1964, and finally to College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in 1987. As of 2009, the College consists of 22 academic and extension departments, and runs the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service, the current name of the former Agricultural Experiment Station. The College continues to strive to meet its three primary functions -- teaching, research, and extension -- as first laid out over a century ago.

Title:   David H. Howells Papers, 1957-1995

Abstract: The collection includes both David H. Howells' writings and his photographic work, with photography making up the bulk of the collection. This collection is divided into two series. The first series, Environmental Research Papers, is comprised primarily of Howells' writings, both published and unpublished. Topics include water quality management and planning, sediment pollution control, water pollution from toxics, ground water management, and water pollution from agriculture. The second series, Photography, includes negatives, prints, slides taken of black-and-white prints on display, and color slides. Information on Howells' participation in photography exhibits is also included, as well as some examples of published photographs. The subject matter of the photographs varies greatly, but there is a strong emphasis on water and the natural world. There are also photographic portraits of more than thirty people.
