| Abstract: |
Personal papers, manuscripts, correspondence, publications, Watauga Club minutes, news clippings of Richard Gaither Walser.
The collection chiefly reflects Walser's work as an authority on North Carolina literature and a scholar of Thomas Wolfe.
Included are personal items, such as passports, articles on and some writing by Zeb Vance Walser (his father), alumni-related
items from Davidson College and the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and items relating to Walser's retirement
from North Carolina State University. There are also publications and reviews by and about Richard Walser. The Thomas Wolfe
material contains reviews of Walser's books on Wolfe, correspondence pertaining to the writing of these books, and an issue
of The Thomas Wolfe Review honoring Richard Walser (Vol. 6, No. 2, Fall 1982). Correspondence and speeches span the years
from 1970 to 1981. Brief biographies of significant North Carolina authors, including Lodwick Hartley and Guy Owen are also
included. The Watauga Club material includes a manuscript for the history of the club and some sources for this history, as
well as minutes, reports, financial records, a constitution and membership lists.

The Ralph Leland Cope Papers consists of materials for an
Engineering 100 course at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University).
Included are official letters, as well as quizzes, assignments, a School of Engineering placement report, and various articles
about academic and professional development. Also included are materials related to freshman orientation, student advising,
aptitude tests and scoring, and the industrial engineering curriculum. The materials date from between 1949 and 1955.

The Frank Houston Smith Papers consist of documents related to Smith and Drs. John O. Halverson and Francis W. Sherwood, two
of his colleagues at the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station (later Agricultural Research Service) at the North
Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). The bulk of the collection,
1929-1942, consists of professional correspondence of Halverson regarding gossypol, a toxin in cotton plants and cottonseed
meal.

| Abstract: |
Jasper L. Stuckey was a geologist, educator, farmer, and consultant. He was born in Princeton, North Carolina, on 24 July
1891 and graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1918 and earned an M.A. in Geology in 1920. He
served briefly in the United States Army in France, seeing combat in the Argonne Forest. Stukey received his Ph.D. from Cornell
University in 1924 and became the State Geologist of North Carolina, serving 1925-1926 and 1940-1965. He became professor
of Geology at North Carolina State College in 1926 and served as head of the Department of Geology from 1927 until 1957.

This collection contains material documenting the personal and professional life of Thomas Nelson, an internationally renowned
textile expert and educator. Included are correspondence, photographs, textile samples, clippings from print media, class
and lab notes, and Nelson's various published works. Of special interest in this collection is correspondence with then-Democratic
presidential nominee Franklin Delano Roosevelt, correspondence with a North Carolina State alumnus serving in the Second World
War, and a signed 4th edition of Nelson's book,
Practical Loom Fixing.
