Also included are 28 pages of records and Colvard's comments concerning the history of the test farm in Swannanoa, N.C., and the Mountain Branch Agricultural Research Station in Waynesville, N.C.

Abstract: The Edgar Eugene Randolph Papers document the Randolph's career as a professor of chemical engineering at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) as well as his personal life, and activities of his wife, Ora Huffman Randolph. Materials contained in these files include letters, 1937-1948, from Randolph's former students, many of which concern their careers in the field and their involvement in World War II; annual reports, statistics, budget materials, lists of graduates and other information, 1927-1945, concerning the development and growth of the Department of Chemical Engineering; newspaper clippings and scrapbooks, 1924-1947, about the department, graduates, and chemical engineering issues in Raleigh; other materials about chemical engineering, including Randolph's writing and technical research; personal materials, including correspondence, 1916-1961; information on the North Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs and the North Carolina Federation of Music Clubs, belonging to Randolph's wife, Ora Huffman Randolph; and photographs of Dr. and Mrs. Randolph, and their families.

Abstract: The Ralph Waldo Green papers include materials documenting Green's education at Cornell University, his career as an editor in the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service, his experience as an agricultural-cooperative organizer, his tenure at North Carolina State College, and his avocation of ornithology and conservation. The papers include professional and personal writings by both him and his wife, Charlotte Hilton Green. The collection also contains correspondence, clippings, memorabilia, photographs and a scrapbook.

Abstract: Personal and professional papers of plant scientist Robert Phillip Upchurch. This collection contains annual reports, 1953-1965, written by Upchurch for a project at the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station, The Development of Principles and Practices for the Control of Weeds in Cotton, Peanuts, Soybeans, Forage Crops, Turf and for the Control of Nutsedge, Johnson Grass and Woody Plants, as well as class notes, 1941-1949, from Upchurch's years as a student in crop science and plant physiology. Robert P. Upchurch's personal military records, 1948-1967, are included in the collection, as are the Upchurch Bulletin, 1980-2006, and Englandia, 1996-1999, family history quarterlies edited and published by Robert Phillip Upchurch. Also included are publications and other materials of the Plant Growth Regulation Society of America.

Abstract: The Elliot B. Grover Papers include materials documenting Grover's early career in private industry, his consulting work with the Joint Chief of Staff examining German textile and pulp factories in the wake of the Allied advance through that country, and his work as a member of the faculty of the College of Textiles of North Carolina State University (although most of the latter type of material may be found in the records of the college's Department of Textile and Apparel Technology and Management, UA 130.021). Included are company papers Grover kept from his time as an executive at Ponemah Mills in Connecticut, as well as records from his service in World War II in England and Germany with the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee. The collection includes correspondence, clippings, foreign currency from his sojourn during World War II in Europe, and official government notes and reports, from 1925 through 1958. Also included are several undated portrait-style photographs of Grover.

Abstract: The Lemuel Goode Papers contain correspondence, predominantly letters regarding Polled Dorset sheep; publications such as the Annual Foundation Polled Dorset Show and Sale (1959-1967), Esso Farm News (Spring 1957), AgriLife (Spring 1966), Extension Farm-News (April 1955), and New England Shepherd (December 1956). The collection also includes news clippings, the bulk of which relate to Goode's work developing Polled Dorset sheep. Abstract: The Dan U. Gerstel Papers contain numerous scientific publications on a variety of topics related to the study of genetics, cytology, plant pathology, and crop science, collected by Dan U. Gerstel during his career as a member of the faculty of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences of North Carolina State University and in the genetics department of the Weizmann Institute of Science (Mekhon Vaitsman le-mada) in Rehovot, Israel. The material is international in scope and covers a period of six decades. In addition to scientific publications, the collection contains personal and professional correspondence, a diary, genealogical research materials, newspaper clippings, and articles related to stamp collecting.

Abstract: The Jim E. Riviere papers contain research notebooks from experiments with the IPPSF, isolated perfused porcine skin flap, a novel in vitro alternative animal model for studies in cutaneous toxicology, dermatology, physiology, oncology, percutaneous drug absorption, and metabolism. Included as well are research notes from different projects and experiments involving pharmacology and toxicology, grant reports and study reports pertaining to Riviere's work with pharmacology and toxicology for North Carolina State University, the United States Department of Defense, the United States Army Medical Research Acquisition Agency, and several private corporations. The collection also contains copies of published articles and computer-printed drafts of textbooks and textbook chapters written and co-written by Jim E. Riviere and his wife and co-researcher, Nancy A. Monteiro-Riviere.

Abstract: As a land-grant institution, North Carolina State University has had agricultural study as an integral part of instruction since its beginning in 1887. In 1917, the first dean of agriculture took office, and the School of Agriculture was established in 1923. The name was changed to School of Agriculture and Life Sciences in 1964, and finally to College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in 1987. As of 2009, the College consists of 22 academic and extension departments, and runs the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service, the current name of the former Agricultural Experiment Station. The College continues to strive to meet its three primary functions -- teaching, research, and extension -- as first laid out over a century ago.
