MoreThis subgroup is composed of a variety of materials related to News Services' work promoting North Carolina State University. The textual records include news releases, clippings, correspondence, university reports, university publications, and files and press information on faculty. The records also contain a number of audiovisual formats, including photographs, slides, and video cassettes of various types (VHS, Betacam SP, MBU 5s, UCA60), documenting broadcasts, press conferences, public service announcements and other media presentations. The materials date from 1896 to 2007. As of 2013, the Office of Public Affairs consisted of three divisions: Communications Services, News Services, and Web Communications. The News Services division uses a wide variety of methods to promote NC State University on local, national, and international levels. Staff members utilize traditional press releases, news tips, and direct contact with journalists to give the university, its scholarship and its research more visibility. They also distribute news stories electronically on listservs and web pages and distribute a list of faculty experts to assist the media and university representatives.

The records of the Office of the Chancellor during Monteith's administration range in date from 1989 to 1998. Larry King Monteith was born in 1933 in Bryson City, North Carolina. In 1989, Monteith became Interim Chancellor, and in 1990 was selected as permanent Chancellor, a position he held until 1998. During Monteith's tenure, enrollment reached a new high, and the College of Textiles was relocated to Centennial Campus. NC State received nationwide recognition and assumed a prominent role in research and education, partly as a result of research grants and fellowships.

The College of Textiles at North Carolina State University began classes in the fall of 1899. By 1901 construction began on Tompkins Hall, the first textile building at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. The textiles program eventually needed more space for students and equipment so in 1940, moved to Nelson Hall on the western fringes of campus. In January 1991, the College of Textiles moved to Centennial Campus.

Materials range in date from 1948 to 2014. In 1955, the position of Dean of Faculty was first established at North Carolina State College (University). In 1967, the title changed to Provost, and in 1971, to Provost and Vice Chancellor. The Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost is NC State's chief academic officer, supporting faculty and programming that make the university a higher education leader. As executive vice chancellor, the provost is the senior executive responsible for NC State’s day-to-day activities. The provost is responsible for the university’s 10 colleges and 12 critical corollary units. The provost oversees the review and approval of all of NC State’s academic programs and policies, and directs the appointment, promotion and compensation of the faculty (https://provost.ncsu.edu/about/whats-a-provost/, accessed 5/29/2020).

MoreThe Raymond Leroy Murray Papers, 1911-2011, contain various papers and files from Raymond Murray's research, teaching, consulting, and other activities. Included are conference papers, class lecture notes, talking points, reports, publication drafts, schedules, research and reference files, and article reprints. The collection contains materials on the following topics: low level radioactive waste management, buckling, radon, criticality, reactor analysis, kinetics, and migration. In various series are papers that Dr. Murray prepared in conjuction with North Carolina State University, various government agencies, and contract work he did with such companies as Bechtel. Raymond Leroy Murray was born on February 14, 1920, in Lincoln, Nebraska, and died on June 22, 2011, in Raleigh, North Carolina. He received a B.S. in education, 1940, and M.S. in physics and mathematics, 1941, from the University of Nebraska, and a Ph.D in physics from the University of Tennessee, 1950. That same year he joined the new nuclear engineering program at North Carolina State College (later University) as a physics professor. He was a key figure in establishing and operating the University's nuclear reactor, which was the first operated on a college campus. From 1963 to 1974 he headed NC State University's Department of Nuclear Engineering. He had many research interests and edited six editions of textbooks about nuclear energy. He worked as a consultant for companies interested in the history of nuclear energy, disasters of nuclear power plants, the development of the atomic bomb and how to safely deal with radioactive waste.

North Carolina State University was established in 1887 as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (A&M College). The College opened in 1889 with one building - the current Holladay Hall - six faculty, and courses in the agricultural and mechanical arts, adding a curriculum in applied science in 1893. By the turn of the century the College had grown to some half dozen buildings, about 300 students, and had begun to diversify its curricula. In 1917, the institution's name was changed to North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (State College). In 1931, it became a part of the Consolidated University of North Carolina. North Carolina State is now one of the constituent institutions of the multi-campus University of North Carolina system.

MoreThe Office for Equal Opportunity and Equity Records contain correspondence, memoranda, meeting minutes, reports, publications, and other material related to the administrative functions of the Affirmative Action Office (later the Office for Equal Opportunity and Equity). The bulk of the material involves efforts by North Carolina State University to comply with federal statutory and regulatory requirements prohibiting discrimination. Also included are records of the Disability Services Office, which became part of the Office for Equal Opportunity in 1999. Most of the Disability Services material, comprising student records, is restricted, and will be deaccessioned according the disposition instructions for GU 323 (Services to Students with Disabilities) of the University of North Carolina (System) General Records Retention and Disposition Schedule. The Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Office oversaw all university activities related to compliance with federal and state laws prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race, gender, and disability. In July of 2011, the office of Equal Opportunity, Equity, and Compliance became a unit under the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity. As of 2020, Equal Opportunity and Equity provides training, resources and assistance to address and end discrimination and harassment at NC State. Areas of focus include accommodations and accessibility, discrimination and harassment, Equal Employment Opportunity and affirmative action, pregnancy, and Title IX.
