The University Archives Reference Collection, University Buildings, Sites, & Landmarks subgroup contains clippings, correspondence, news releases, publications, reports, speeches, and related archival material concerning the physical features of the University landscape. This is an artificial collection, maintained by Special Collections staff. North Carolina State University was established in 1887 as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (A&M College). The College opened in 1889 with one building - the current Holladay Hall - six faculty, and courses in the agricultural and mechanical arts, adding a curriculum in applied science in 1893. By the turn of the century the College had grown to some half dozen buildings, about 300 students, and had begun to diversify its curricula. In 1917, the institution's name was changed to North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (State College). In 1931 the College greatly reworked its curricula as it underwent consolidation. Along with North Carolina College for Women and the University of North Carolina, it became a part of the Consolidated University of North Carolina,. North Carolina State is now one of the constituent institutions of the multi-campus University of North Carolina system, having received university status, and, after some controversy, assumed its current name in 1965. The College of Natural Resources photographs include portraits and candid shots of students and faculty in classes, labs, and outdoor settings. Prominent faculty members pictured include Carl Alwin Schenck, Richard J. Preston, and Clarence E. Libby. Photographs of meetings, conferences, events, and awards receptions are included. This collection also contains images of the buildings, laboratories, and equipment associated with the College of Natural Resources. Although the majority of the photographs are undated, these photographs range approximately from the late 1930s to the late 1990s; most are from the 1950s to the 1970s. The majority of these photographs are black and white. In 1929, North Carolina State College formally established the Department of Forestry. In 1931, the Department of Forestry was renamed the Division of Forestry, and in 1950, the Division of Forestry was elevated to School status and renamed the School of Forestry. The School of Forestry became the School of Forest Resources in 1968, and the College of Forest Resources in 1987. Finally, in 2000, the College of Forest Resources assumed its present name, the College of Natural Resources. As of 2010, the College of Natural Resources includes the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources, the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management, and the Department of Wood and Paper Science. Graeber became an Extension Forester and provided strong leadership for the establishment of a formal forestry program. In 1929, the University formally established the Department of Forestry in the School of Agriculture. Dr. Julius V. Hofmann served as its first Director, starting early on to acquire land to create teaching and research forests. In 1931 the Department of Forestry was renamed the Division of Forestry, School of Agriculture and Forestry. Dr. J.V. Hofmann retired as Director of the Division in 1948 and was replaced by Richard J. Preston. During Preston's tenure, in 1950, the Division of Forestry was elevated to School status and named the School of Forestry. In 1952 the School moved to new quarters in Kilgore Hall. The School underwent another name change in 1968 to the School of Forest Resources. The administration changed the name to better reflect the broadening of its programs, including the addition of the parks, recreation, and tourism management curriculum transferred from the School of Education. In 1970 the School moved into the newly constructed forestry building Biltmore Hall, named after the nation's first school of forestry, the Biltmore Forest School. At the retirement of Dean Preston in 1971, Eric L. Ellwood, who was serving as head of the Department of Wood and Paper Science, became Dean, serving until 1989.
