The records of the North Carolina State University Department of Plant Pathology contain article reprints, brochures, correspondence, facilities information, meeting minutes, reports and presentation material, research projects, and publications. It also contains photographic prints, negatives, lantern slides, and video cassettes of events, individual and group portraits, and research specimens. Major correspondents include J. Lawrence Apple, Robert Aycock, Charles J. Nusbaum, Don E. Ellis, and Nash N. Winstead. In addition, there is a significant amount of extension material available, including correspondence, education materials, meeting minutes, Plans of Work, and research reports. Materials range in date from 1901 to 2001. Plant pathology at North Carolina State University grew out of work done by the North Carolina Experiment Station. In 1958, Plant Pathology became a full-fledged department, and was included along with four other departments in the creation of the Institute of Biological Sciences. With the discontinuation of the Institute in 1971, Plant Pathology became a department within the School (now College) of Agriculture and Life Sciences. North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) officially became involved in athletics when it financed the school's football team in 1893, the year after the team's first unofficial games. Other sports were organized by the early twentieth century. All teams began using the nickname "Wolfpack" in 1947. The North Carolina State University, Athletics, Men's Basketball Audio/Visual Materials collection contains primarily moving image films and videos of North Carolina State University Men's basketball games. Many of these were captured by the Department of Athletics for coaching and review purposes, and are mostly without sound, commentary, or other narration. Also included in this collection are a number of broadcast recordings centering around the NCAA championship titles of 1974 and 1983; as well as miscellaneous footage of individual players and coaches at NC State. There are some coaches' shows as well. Materials range in date from the 1939 to 2014, with a number of films undated. As of 2023, the North Carolina State Wolfpack basketball team has won almost 20 conference tournaments, competed in the NCAA Tournament almost 30 times, gone to the Final Four three times, and won a national championship twice. Everett Case coached the Pack from 1946 to 1965 and was instrumental in forming the Atlantic Coast Conference. They won the 1974 championship under the leadership of Coach Norm Sloan. The "Cardiac Pack" as they were called achieved one of the great upsets in sports history under Coach Jim Valvano in 1983 to win the National Championship. Less

Wimberley, Dept. of Sociology and Anthropology Head. Materials range in date from 1862 to 2010. Sociology courses were first offered at State College (now NC State University) in 1920 with the arrival of Dr. Carl Cleveland Taylor and graduate student Carle Clark Zimmerman. Both would later become important figures in the field of sociology. Rural sociology, which sought to improve the quality of life of rural communities, was a focus of the early program. After several iterations, the Department merged with the Department of Anthropology in 1966 to become the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. The MeadWestvaco Research Reports contain various reports and materials created and used by forestry researchers at 14 research stations established and owned by MeadWestvaco from 1945 to 2006. The collection is broken down into four series which correspond to types of reports published. The first contains various lists and indexes and the other three series are research reports, technical memoranda, and information sheets. The largest series contains research reports from each of the 14 research stations about fertilization, herbicide use, chemical debarking, pulpwood growth, stand yield and tree transportation cost analysis. The subject matter of individual reports varies greatly. The technical memoranda and information sheets are supplementary material. In 1945, what would become MeadWestvaco was called the "West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company," with David L. Luke as president. He was the grandson of the original founder William Luke, who founded the company in 1888. David L. Luke oversaw the purchase of many acres of forest in Pennsylvania, Maryland, the Virginias and the Carolinas, where company research stations were later established. His son, David Luke III, became president in 1963, and after that his other son, John A. Luke led the company. A member of the Luke family continues to hold the position of Chief Executive Officer, at present John A. Luke Jr., but the family no longer possesses majority stock ownership. Less

The Peter Batchelor Papers, 1967-2010, contain correspondence, administrative papers, urban design studies, computer printouts, doctoral papers, graphic materials, and industry publications relating to Batchelor's career as a professional urban planner and his administration of the American Institute of Architects, North Carolina’s (AIANC) Urban Design Assistance Program. Also included are VHS tapes of his lectures and exhibition materials created by students documenting Batchelor's time as a professor of design and urban planning at North Carolina State University. Born in London, England, on May 22, 1934, and died on April 15, 2020, Peter Batchelor earned a Bachelor of Architecture (honors) from the University of British Columbia in 1960, Masters of Architecture and City Planning from the University of Pennsylvania in 1966, and a Doctorate in City Planning from the latter institution in 1972. He taught at North Carolina State University’s School of Architecture from 1968 until 2007, when he retired as Professor Emeritus. Batchelor is also a licensed practitioner in architecture and city planning and former director of the American Institute of Architects, North Carolina (AIANC) Urban Design Assistance Program which provides interdisciplinary problem-solving teams to communities. Also included are materials on the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Fiftieth Anniversary of the research stations, the Tennessee Valley Authority, agricultural products, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, individual college departments and their role in experiment station research, and the National Pickle Packers Association. Records include a letter book of the director. Materials range in date from 1878 to present. The North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station was created in 1877, and transferred from the State of North Carolina to the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later, North Carolina State University) in 1889. The Station was jointly run by the two groups, and became a source of contention between the State Department of Agriculture and the University through the early part of the twentieth century. Eric G. Flannagan, Sr. (1892-1970) was an architect and engineer practicing most of his life in North Carolina. The Gil Wheless Papers, 1960-2016, document the professional activities of Gilbert B. Wheless and the landscape architectural firm Environmental Design Associates PC (EDA). The collection is arranged into four series: drawings, photographic materials, project files, and electronic materials. Drawings include blueprints, sketches, and working drawings, mainly representing a variety of projects undertaken by Wheless and EDA, as well as architectural and engineering firms with which they worked. Photographic materials include prints, negatives, and slides depicting the design, construction, and completion of various projects, including residences and residential pools. Project files include EDA promotional materials, reference files, correspondence, sketches and project lists. Electronic files are primarily CDs containing photographs and documents relating to projects. This collection does not document the full extent of projects designed by EDA; it primarily represents just those projects on which Wheless worked. Gilbert B. Wheless, Jr. is a landscape architect who grew up in Durham, North Carolina. He graduated from Durham High School in 1960 and entered the School of Design (now College of Design) at North Carolina State University in 1961. In 1962, he began to focus on landscape architecture and studied under Lewis Clarke and Richard Moore. In 1970 Wheless, Donald Ferlow, and John Soluri became founding principals of Environmental Design Associates, PC. In the 2009, Wheless retired from the firm and returned to Durham. Less

The Roy Styring Dearstyne Papers contain materials related to Dearstyne's education, teaching career, and endeavors in the field of poultry science, as well as materials related to his death and the Dearstyne Avian Health Center. Roy Styring Dearstyne was a member of the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) Poultry Science faculty from 1922 to 1955, serving as the head of the Poultry Science Department from 1930 until his retirement in 1955. He developed a testing procedure for controlling pullorum disease in poultry, wrote one of the first books in the nation about poultry diseases, and was instrumental in the development and expansion of the North Carolina poultry industry. The Brian Shawcroft Papers, 1958-2017, contain drawings and other materials documenting the professional activities of modernist architect Brian Shawcroft and associated architecture firms Holloway-Reeves; MacMillan, MacMillan, Shawcroft & Thames; Environmental Planning Associates; Shawcroft-Taylor; and McKimmon Edwards Shawcroft Associates. The collection is arranged into five series: drawings, professional files, photographic materials, project records, and slides. Drawings include original drawings, reproductions, and CAD printouts of process (or design) drawings and construction documents such as site plans, additions, alterations, and remodeling plans. Professional files include a list of completed projects, reproductions of photographs of projects, and supplemental materials to projects, Shawcroft’s curriculum vitae, and awards. Photographic materials include black-and-white and color prints and photographs of projects. Most photographs were taken by Shawcroft. Brian Shawcroft, born in England in 1929, is a modernist architect. Shawcroft studied architecture at the South West Essex Technical College and School of Art in London from 1949 to 1953. In 1960, he received a Masters in Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Following this, he served as an associate professor and lecturer in architecture at the North Carolina State College's School of Design from 1960 to 1968. Shawcroft began practicing architecture professionally in 1954 and worked with various firms throughout his career. He is recognized for designing much of the modernist home inventory in the Research Triangle region from the 1970s to the late 1990s. In 1991 he was awarded the annual Henry Kamphoefner Prize by the American Institute of Architects-North Carolina Chapter for demonstrated excellence in the Modern Movement of architecture. This collection primarily contains letters from Azariah Graves Thompson (1885-1963) to his family in Leasburg, North Carolina, from 1905 to 1909, while he was a student at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University); a print bill entitled "Regulations for Dormitories at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts"; a typed transcription of reminiscences written in about 1900 by Thompson's mother, Ella Williams Graves Thompson; and a typed transcription of "A History of Leasburg with Personal Recollections," 1960, written by his sister, Ella Graves Thompson. Also included are photographs and typed transcriptions of the letters and some notes, 1997, on local and family history by Jeannine D. Whitlow. Azariah Graves Thompson (1885-1963) was a native of Leasburg, North Carolina and attended the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts from 1905 to 1909. Less

This collection contains cassette audiotapes, transcripts, abstracts, and biographies for 2 interviews (with four people total) conducted in 2007 by Chad Morgan, a member of the NC State University Libraries staff. The interviews were conducted with former staff members who had worked at the library during the integration period of the 1960s and 1970s. In 1962 Edward Walker was hired as the first full-time African-American staff member at the NC State University Libraries. In 1970 William V. Frazier was hired as the first African-American in a professional librarian position. In 2007 NC State University Libraries staff conducted oral history interviews with former staff member who had worked during the integration period of the 1960s and 1970s. Less

The Philip J. Kiviat Papers (1962-2010) consist primarily of technical papers related to Kiviat's work in developing the GASP and SIMSCRIPT simulation languages in the 1960s and 1970s. Other papers include conference brochures, contracts, correspondence, and writings by others. Philip J. Kiviat is the author of two books on simulation programming languages (SIMSCRIPT II and GASP) and numerous technical papers. The “Kiviat Graph” is widely used in the computer hardware and software performance field, as well as in other disciplines, to portray performance patterns and distinguish modes of behavior. Kiviat was the first technical Director of the Federal Computer Performance Evaluation and Simulation Center (FEDSIM) that was established by the United States Air Force in 1972. Less

Included are professional and personal correspondence; research proposals; notes, reports, drafts of articles, speeches, and conference papers; university committee files; photographs and newspaper clippings; a scrapbook and several historical accounts of the North Carolina State University Department of Chemical Engineering; poetry; and other documents. Kenneth Orion Beatty was a professor of chemical engineering, 1946-1978, at North Carolina State University. His research interests included heat and mass transfer field, and in the 1960s and 1970s, he was a major participant in the International Heat Transfer Conferences. The Agricultural Policy Institute was created in 1960 via a grant from the Kellogg Foundation, and was run by the Department of Agricultural Economics (which later merged into the Department of Economics and is currently called the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics). The Institute's mission was primarily an educational one, and it set forth to study the economic issues facing the South and to aid the formation of public policy in confronting these issues. The Institute was disbanded in 1970. Less
