The Alexander Quarles Holladay Papers consist of photographs, letters, a speech, a notebook, a memory book, and a certificate of Holladay's Civil War military commission. The memory book is from Holladay's final year as a student at the University of Virginia. The speech given at the presentation of his portrait provides a genealogy dating to 1702. Some photographs of Shakespearean engravings are included. Other materials relate to Holladay's tenure as the first president of North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) and include a "Book of Incidental Expenses" kept by Holladay during the first year, 1889-1890. The published books are items that had been in the Holladay family. Alexander Quarles Holladay (1839-1909) was a Civil War veteran, lawyer, educator, Virginia state senator, and college president. He was named the first president of North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) upon its opening in 1889 and remained so for ten years until his retirement in 1899. The Bernard Unti Book and Ephemera Collection on Animal Studies contains books, pamphlets, ephemera, and material culture objects tied to the history of the kindness-to-animals ethic, organized animal protection, vegetarianism, anti-vivisection and related concerns. The majority of the collection is comprised of books with many dating to the 1800s and early 20th Century. Bernard Unti, Ph.D., is an animal rights and welfare advocate who served as Senior Policy Adviser and Special Assistant to the President and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) from 2004 to 2021. Unti was then hired as Senior Principal Strategist in Communications for the HSUS. Unti is the author of Protecting All Animals: A Fifty-Year History of The Humane Society of the United States (2004), which covers the history of the HSUS from its creation to the early twentieth century. Unti has also written a number of essays and articles on animal cruelty as a historical and contemporary issue. In addition to working for the HSUS and Humane Society International, he worked at the Animal Anti-Vivisection Society (AAVS) in various positions from 1985 to 1992, including the position of Executive Director. These papers represent B. W. (Bertram Whittier) Wells's research interests, publications, and honors as well as Wells's personal life and pursuits, his first wife, Edna Metz Wells, his second wife, Maude Barnes Wells, and his household at Rockcliff Farm, a property on the Neuse River in North Carolina that Wells acquired before his retirement in 1954. In writing his biography of Wells, Prof. James R. Troyer amassed the majority of the materials comprising series 1 of these papers. Series 2 is composed of papers left behind by B. W. and Maude Barnes Wells at Rockcliff Farm, now part of the Falls Lake State Recreation Area in Wake Forest, North Carolina. A third series, Additional Artifacts and Books, has been added to the collection since the conclusion of an exhibit on Wells in 2007. Bertram Whittier Wells is most widely known for his study and preservation of North Carolina's natural environment. Wells headed North Carolina State College's (later North Carolina State University) Botany Department from 1919 to 1949 and remained on the faculty until 1954. One of the first to rightly be called an ecologist, he wrote on many topics: the insect galls of plants, the effects of salt on coastal vegetation, Bald Head Island, and the formation of the Carolina Bays. However, his most extensive work focused on savannah and pocosin vegetation. First published by the University of North Carolina Press in 1932, Wells's popular book, The Natural Gardens of North Carolina, remains in print. Wells also advocated for modern scientific instruction methods, including the teaching of evolution in the 1920s. During Wells's long retirement, he became seriously interested in painting. Less

Cannon family of Marion, McDowell County, North Carolina. Family members include William F. Cannon, Peter F. Cannon, and Julius A. Cannon. The 1870, 1880, 1900, and 1910 United States censuses all list a Cannon family in McDowell County, and it is possible that it is the one this material corresponds to. The Cannon Family Papers contain account books, a scrapbook, papers from the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service, tax records, a mathematics practice notebook, an owner's manual for a mower, and clippings of advertisements. The materials belonged to William F. Cannon, Peter F. Cannon, Julius A. Cannon, and other members of the Cannon family. They range in date from approximately 1839 to 1951. Less

The Charlotte Vestal Brown Wainwright Papers, 1767-1990, include correspondence, photographs, research notes, transcriptions, and blueprints. Material was gathered by Charlotte Vestal Brown Wainwright for her study of the practice of building in North Carolina between 1865 and 1945 and includes information on the administration of the grant project, photographs and manuscripts from the book written by Brown, as well as research and reference files used in the project. The Claire Necker Papers contain notes, drafts, compilations of images, clippings, artifacts, and publications relating to Necker's research interests on cats. The writings and illustrations in the collection includes notes and drafts as well as illustrations Necker compiled during research for publications. There are numerous notebooks listing publications. Additionally, there is artwork and artifacts relating to cats or other animals. The correspondence series is fairly short with mostly letters to Necker. A portion of the correspondence is with Guy Bogart, who traded lengthy typed letters with Necker and two other correspondents. Much of the material is undated, but likely dates from the 1960s-1980s with some clippings dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, or earlier. Claire Kral Necker was born Claire Kral Nemec on 16 October 1917. In 1939 she married Walter L. Necker, who was then completing a BS in zoology at the University of Chicago. She and Walter shared interests in science and bibliography. Walter worked with a variety of organizations as, at various times, scientist, librarian, curator and rare books cataloger. Claire earned Master's degrees in Zoology and Chemistry (when and where is not documented, though it was sometime before 1968), and after World War II she and Walter started Aardvark Books, a mail-order antiquarian book business. Claire and Walter divorced in 1968, and she found work at a local library. Claire had for some time pursued a career as a free-lance writer, but in 1969 she published her first book, Cats and Dogs (A. S. Barnes). Necker's other works include The Natural History of Cats (Delta, 1970), Supernatural Cats; An Anthology (Doubleday, 1972), Four Centuries of Cat Books (Scarecrow Press, 1972), and The Cat's Got Our Tongue (Scarecrow Press, 1973). The Clyde F. Smith Papers contain literature, reprints, articles and books primarily pertaining to the insect family Aphididae, of the Order Homoptera. Two books, Bibliography of the Aphididae of the World (1972) and An Annotated List of Aphididae (Homoptera) of North America (1978) are indexes of the papers. Research materials consist of literature by noted authors from around the world who study aphids, their life cycles, reproduction variables, climate conditions, host plants and biological and chemical control. This collection is an extension of the Zeno Metcalf Collection. Also included are index cards on various Aphididae, which include an annotated generic and specific index to all literature cited in Smith's 1972 Bibliography of the Aphididae of the World, a host plant index indicating the aphids associated with each host and the source citing this association, and an index of aphid-parasitoids associations. Clyde F. Smith joined the faculty of the North Carolina State College Entomology Department in September 1939. He served as Head of N.C. State's Entomology Department from 1950 to 1964. Smith received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Utah State University (then Utah State Agricultural College). He received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in 1939. In 1972-1973, Smith served as president of the Southeastern Branch of the Entomological Society of America. Less

The records of the Council Tool Company document the history and operation of the North Carolina-based company from its founding by John Pickett Council in 1886 to the end of the twentieth century. The collection contains the company’s correspondence, financial records, and materials relating to personnel, plant operations, and merchandise. This collection also contains papers of the Council family spanning several generations, beginning in the early 1800s and with a few items from the 18th century. Correspondence, invoices, order letters, bills of lading, and related materials relate to the company’s operations including manufacturing, sales, transportation, information requests, and clientele. Financial records include accounting records, tax records, correspondence with accountants, records from the fire of October 20, 1970, and records relating to stocks. Accounting records include account books (ledgers), day books, trial balances, annual reviews of the company, and payroll ledgers. Office Files contain various information about the Council Tool Company and its operations, including correspondence, personnel files, catalogs and product information, machinery and equipment, inventories, notes and memoranda, and information about labor unions, insurance, and board meetings. Also included with the business records are files on the pulpwood industry, test hacks with accompanying reports, and maps and drawings. The family papers contain correspondence, financial records, and legal documents belonging to family members, including K. K. Council, John Pickett Council, K. Clyde Council, Edward L. Council, and Louise Council and a poem by Kinchin B. Council. Deeds and land grants, as well as correspondence about estates and property, constitute a substantial portion of the family papers. Council Tool Company is a family owned and operated business based in Lake Waccamaw, North Carolina. The company was founded in 1886 by John Pickett Council, a turpentine producer and farmer in Bladen County, North Carolina. The company’s earliest product line featured tools used in the naval stores industry. When the naval stores industry began to wane, the company reacted by diversifying its product line. The company grew during the early decades of the twentieth century, surviving the Great Depression, two World Wars, and a devastating fire that destroyed much of the manufacturing plant. As of 2015, the company's full line of professional products included axes, picks, mauls, mattocks, striking tools, shrubbing tools, digging tools, wood-splitting tools, forged bars, C-clamps and a variety of specialty tools. The company has always been headed by a Council, and as of 2015, the president is John M. Council III. Less

The Elizabeth Vann Moore Family Papers contain family history materials as well as extensive records about the day-to-day operations of Sterling Cotton Mills in Franklinton, North Carolina, which several family members managed. Business papers include correspondence, financial reports, and audits documenting Sterling Cotton Mills' founding in 1895, bankruptcy during the Great Depression, and revival in the 1940s and 1950s. Family history materials include correspondence, journals, scrapbooks, and photographs of the Moore and Vann families, which document their experiences from the turn of the twentieth century through World War II and later. Elizabeth Vann Moore (1912-2010) of Edenton, North Carolina, was born in Henderson, North Carolina, to John A. Moore, Sr., and Mabel Vann Moore. Mabel's father, Samuel Cannady Vann (1852-1924), established Sterling Cotton Mills in 1895. Following the Great Depression, the company went into bankruptcy and was purchased by Mabel at auction. Her husband, John Sr., ran the company alongside her brother, Aldridge H. Vann, until John Sr.'s death in 1947. Elizabeth's brother, John A. Moore, Jr., then took over the company until his death in 1982. An historian and historic preservation activist, Elizabeth collected extensive family history materials, including material related to her family's role in managing Sterling Cotton Mills. She also preserved business correspondence, financial reports, and audits of the company. Less

The Harry Charles Kelly Papers include correspondence, articles, reports, speeches, awards, photographs, artifacts and other items related to Kelly's career as a physicist, science administrator, and educator. Harry Charles Kelly (1908-1976), physicist, educator, science administrator and author, was educated in physics at Lehigh University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1945, Kelly accepted the position of Chief of Science and Technology for the Special Projects Unit of the United States Army. His work helped strengthen cooperative scientific ventures between Japan and the United States. Kelly later worked for the National Science Foundation and, resuming his academic career, served as Provost at North Carolina State University. Less

The Ira Obed Schaub Papers contain correspondence, news articles, writings, publications, awards, and certificates concerning Schaub's professional life, from his career in 4-H work to his work at North Carolina State's cooperative extension program and as dean of the North Carolina State University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The Schaub Papers also includes information about the personal life of Ira Obed Schaub, including his community involvement, travel, and education. A small number of documents concerning Maud Kennedy Schaub, the wife of Ira Obed Schaub, and some materials regarding the Schaub and Kennedy families, are also part of the collection. Correspondence includes letters about general cryptography, articles written by Levine and others, Levine's cryptographic patents book, and cryptographic computer tests. Research contains notes, computer printouts, article reprints, and note cards related to Levine's research interests in cryptography. Writings includes Levine's published and unpublished essays and pamphlets. Teaching Career includes class notes and other student-related material. Collected Works includes articles, books, and bibliographic information of other authors in the fields of mathematics and cryptography. Unprocessed Material contains copies of articles and publications on cryptography. Most of the materials are from Levine's lifetime, but some of the items in the Collected Works series are from as early as 1716. The Jack Levine Papers documents Levine's career as a crytographic researcher and mathematics professor at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1936 to 1995. The collection contains information on Levine's research, writings, university career, and correspondence. His main interests were tensor analysis, geometrics of generalized spaces, differential geometry, combinatorial analysis, theory of symmetric functions, algebraic cryptography and mathematical physics. The James F. Wright Papers contains membership lists, meeting minutes, and correspondence of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (AAZV), as well as case reports presented to the Association. Other materials include professional correspondence, reports, notes, articles, and five 16 mm films relating to early use of dart guns and tranquilizing agents. The collection also contains professional certificates, yearbooks from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, and pages from a scrapbook. Most materials date from the late 1950s to early 1970s, with a few earlier and later items. James F. Wright was an honorary diplomate of the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM) and a researcher in the field of zoological health. He served on the faculty of N.C. State University from 1984 to 2004, and he was a pathologist and consulting clinical veterinarian at the North Carolina Zoological Park. He was the first clinical veterinarian at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., and helped establish a national zoo in Senegal, Africa. He is notable for his contribution to refining early dart guns and tranquilizing agents. In addition to the American College of Zoological Medicine, he was a member of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians, Wildlife Disease Association, American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, Society of Toxicologic Pathologists, American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums, and the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association.
