            <abstract id="ref3" label="Abstract">Newton (1893-1970) played professional baseball with the Baltimore Orioles and coached college football and baseball at Davidson College before becoming head football coach at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1932 to 1944.</abstract>
