This series contains drawings and plans for a number of Schnedl’s projects and several historic buildings designed by other
                                       architects, which include site plans, floor plans, electrical and plumbing plans, elevations, sections, and details. Most
                                       of the projects are residential, many of which were located on Bald Head Island, North Carolina. There are also several designs
                                       for school, church, and office buildings.

Scope and Content Note

The Richard B. Schnedl Papers, 1896-2011, document the professional activities of architect Richard Burke Schnedl and his architectural firms. The collection contains drawings and plans for a number of Schnedl’s projects and several historic buildings designed by other architects, which include site plans, floor plans, electrical and plumbing plans, elevations, sections, and details. Project files contain contracts, correspondence, details, and other information for a small number of Schnedl’s projects. Office records contain clippings related to Bald Head Island and other projects, promotional materials, project lists, photographs and slides, memoranda, and architectural publications featuring Schnedl’s work. Personal papers include a homemade birthday card, humorous articles, materials relating to a speech given by Frank Lloyd Wright at North Carolina State College, correspondence with North Carolina State University Libraries, and a certificate and class photograph from the Georgia Military Academy, dated 1944.

Biographical/Historical Note

Richard Burke Schnedl (1926-) is a North Carolina-based architect who specialized in residential design. Schnedl received a B.Arch. from North Carolina State College in 1952 and worked as a designer and draftsman for Leslie N. Boney. In 1953, Schnedl and his brother Edwin created a firm known as Schnedl & Schnedl in Reidsville, North Carolina. The firm operated until 1964 when Edwin Schnedl moved to Alexandria, Virginia. Richard then became a partner at Hayes, Howell & Associates, and later ran his own firm called Richard B. Schnedl, Architect and Richard B. Schnedl & Partner. After Schnedl left, the firm became John W. Thompson, Architect, P.A., which as of 2011, still operates in Southport, North Carolina. Schnedl’s projects were primarily residential, many of which were located at Bald Head Island, North Carolina.
