Most are unpublished papers prepared in the late 1970s and early 1980s for presentation at meetings of the Popular Culture Association, Science Fiction Research Association, Society for Utopian Studies, and other organizations. A few reprints of published articles are included. Among the papers are several about Robert Silverberg, Kurt Vonnegut, the city in science fiction, and utopias and dystopias in science fiction.</abstract>

            <p>Richard D. Erlich served as a Professor in English at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, from 1971 to 2006. In collaboration with Thomas P. Dunn, he has edited 
                <title ns2:href="" render="italic" type="simple">The Mechanical God: Machines in Science Fiction</title> and 
                <title ns2:href="" render="italic" type="simple">Clockwork Worlds: Mechanized Environments in SF</title>, and compiled 
                <title ns2:href="" render="italic" type="simple">Clockworks: A Multimedia Bibliography of Works Useful for the Study of the Human/Machine Interface in SF</title>. Alone and in various collaborations he has published essays on the Buck Rogers opus, 
                <title ns2:href="" render="italic" type="simple">Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome</title>, 
                <title ns2:href="" render="italic" type="simple">2001: A Space Odyssey</title>, Shakespeare pedagogy, Alexander Pope, D. H. Lawrence, and science fiction works by Arthur C. Clarke, Ursula K. LeGuin, Frederik Pohl and C. M. Kornbluth, Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, Robert Silverberg, and D. F. Jones.</p>

            <head>Scope and Content Note</head>
            <p>Papers by many different authors, most of whom were faculty at colleges and universities, about various authors and themes in 
                <subject>science fiction</subject>. Most are unpublished papers prepared in the late 1970s and early 1980s for presentation at meetings of the 
                <corpname>Popular Culture Association</corpname>, 
                <corpname>Science Fiction Research Association</corpname>, 
                <corpname>Society for Utopian Studies</corpname>, and other organizations. A few reprints of published articles are included. Among the papers are several about
