Lisa Finlay received bachelor's degrees from Warren Wilson College in Asheville, North Carolina and North Carolina Central University, before attending graduate school at North Carolina State University. During her time at North Carolina State University she combined her interests in feminism and animal rights, completing a self-designed Master of Arts in Liberal Studies in 1993 entitled "Forms of Oppression: Sexism, Racism, and Speciesism." Animal rights activist and, at that time, North Carolina State University professor Tom Regan served as her thesis advisor. Also in 1993, Finlay helped organize the A New Generation for Animal Rights (ANGFAR) conference at the New Brunswick Campus of Rutgers University. She was both the coordinator and main contact person for the conference.

A long-time member of Feminists for Animal Rights (FAR), Finlay served as the organization's volunteer regional coordinator in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. When the organization opened its national office in Chapel Hill in January 1994, Finlay was hired as FAR's first director. Finlay also served on the editorial committee and the production staff of the organization's biannual publication.

The Audio-Visual Materials series consists of eight VHS-format videocassettes and a slide show with audiocassette narration. Seven of the videocassettes comprise the only collection of videos of the talks given at the 1993 ANGFAR (A New Generation for Animal Rights) conference. Lisa Finlay was the coordinator and contact person for the ANGFAR conference, which took place July 29 through August 1, 1993 at the New Brunswick Campus of Rutgers University. It featured workshops and a number of speakers, including Tom Regan. The final VHS tape is an independent production-"Ecofeminism Now!"-and the slide show is entitled "Culture of Violence: The Animal Connection."
