 Biographical note

Robert Sargent studied simulation methodology and modeling at the University of Michigan as a graduate student in the 1960s. After completing his Ph.D. at Michigan in 1966, he joined the faculty at Syracuse University, where he taught simulation until he retired in the late 1990s. Sargent made significant contributions to several areas of simulation research and professional practices, dissemination of knowledge, software development, and visibility of the field.

Sargent’s major methodological research areas include hybrid analytic simulation modeling, Event Graph models, Control Flow Graph Models, event-list processing, associative processing, and parallel simulation. His interests in output analysis include development of new statistical estimators, comparison of confidence interval estimators, methodology for validating metamodels that use different types of basis functions, and the development of the cyclic regenerative method. In the area of simulation theory, Sargent cooperatively developed a logic based general framework for discrete-event modeling and simulation.

Sargent has also been noted for sustained professional involvement and service throughout his career. He participated and took leadership roles in numerous organizations and events including the annual Winter Simulation Conference, as well as Symposia on the Simulation of Computer Systems, the Association for Computing Machinery, The Institute of Management Sciences and the Operations Research Society of America, which merged to become the Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences, and local professional societies. He gave numerous presentations at conferences and universities around the world and contributed various works of professional literature. For his service work, Sargent has received awards from the ACM, IIE, the WSC Board of Directors, and the INFORMS-College on Simulation Lifetime Professional Achievement Award.

Sargent chaired the dissertations of nine Ph.D. students, six of whom did their Ph.D. work in the area of simulation, and with his students, developed prototype simulation systems including Hierarchical Modeling and Simulation System-Java to demonstrate the concept and workability of using the paradigm of the Hierarchical Control Flow Graph Model together with visual interactive simulation model building and an updated approach to experimental frames. Some of these developments were done on behalf of the U.S. Air Force.
