Historical Note

In 1955, architect Jesse M. Page founded an architectural firm in Raleigh, North Carolina under the name Jesse M. Page & Associates. From its beginning, the small firm was involved in the design and construction of many educational and institutional facilities. Their numerous educational projects include primary and secondary schools throughout central and eastern North Carolina, often reflecting the different goals and needs required of rural and urban schools. Ballard, McCredie Associates also worked on many projects reflecting the rapid pace and change of scientific research during the late twentieth century. Their commissions parallel this change with the needs of educational and federal institutions to keep pace with new technologies. Restoration commissions were also part of their work. The firm was dissolved in 1998.

Scope and Content Note

These records document the architectural projects of Ballard, McCredie Associates from its beginning in 1955 until its dissolution in 1998. They consist primarily of architectural drawings, project files, photographs and slides. The commissions include primary and secondary schools, churches, banks, state and federal research laboratories and offices, and university buildings. The records survey 70 selected projects of the approximately 320 projects designed and constructed by the firm. The selection criteria used to choose these projects included architectural importance, geographic location, building types, and chronology. An attempt was made to include examples of all the varying types of structures designed by the firm, as well as sample projects from each decade of the firm's existence. Some of the projects selected include dormitory and classroom projects for N.C. State University and East Carolina University, high schools in Ahoskie and Garner, NC, state laboratories the Bath building and Standards lab, renovations and upfits for federal research institutions located at Research Triangle Park, NC, such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), and restoration commissions such as Wilson Library on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, for which they won a 1992 Tower Awards Letter of Commendation from the North Carolina chapter of the American Institute of Architects. This original McKim, Mead & White building was converted by Ballard, McCredie Associates from the main campus library to a special collections library housing many rare book and manuscript collections. Other restoration projects included the restoration of the state Labor Building (the old Supreme Court and State Library building), the Andrew Johnson birthplace and other buildings at Mordecai Historic Park in Raleigh, and the Music Building at Burwell School in Hillsborough, NC.

Organization of the Collection

The records have been maintained in original order and are organized into three series: the first series, Project Files, is the largest and includes the records relating to each architectural project selected in the survey. The second series, Photographic Material, includes photographs and slides of most projects produced between 1955-1989. The third series, Miscellaneous Material, includes lists of all Ballard, McCredie projects and original project file cards.

Detailed Description of the Collection

MC 251 Series 01:Project Files, 1956-1991

This series, arranged in original order by job number, includes files and drawings regarding the design and construction of the firm's architectural projects. Each architectural project is designated in the finding aid by the call number: MC#.p.folder. Each project is divided into seven subseries, arranged alphabetically. The first subseries, Correspondence, includes general correspondence and conversation reports, and also correspondence, contracts and change orders with each contractor involved with the project. The second subseries, Drawings, includes original schematic, design development, working drawings, some diazo and sepia prints, and tissue sketches. The third subseries, Inspection and Monthly Reports, includes reports from the architects and engineers concerning construction progress and problems at each site. The next subseries is Photographs, which includes photographs detailing an architectural project. The fifth subseries, Specifications, contains job and construction specifications, educational and needs requirements, as well as historical and final reports. The sixth subseries, Statement Files, includes the firm's financial information regarding each project including contracts, invoices, and proposals. The final subseries is Work Files. These extensive files include field notes and sketches, measurements, articles, some photographs, and design notes.
