Hunter was a professor for 20 years at Dartmouth College and Chapter President of both the New Hampshire and the Raleigh AIA. Edgar Hunter, Jr., was also a competitive Alpine skier in the 1930s. At Harvard, Hunter met Margaret "Peg" King (1919-1997) whom he would later marry. The Hunters practiced in Hanover, New Hampshire from 1945-1966, both teaching at Dartmouth and designing several buildings on the campus. They were featured in the 1950, 1953, and 1956 Architectural Record, among other magazines. In 1966 they relocated to Raleigh as E.H. and M.K. Hunter AIA. In Raleigh, the couple continued to design and renovate residential structures as well as commercial buildings, such as the Craft Pavilion at the NC State Fairgrounds, Ridgewood Shopping Center, and North Hills Shopping Center. Their Raleigh house, no longer standing, was one of their best works. The couple authored The Indoor Garden together, and M.K.
