Special Collections Research Center Reference Staff LanguageEnglish Acquisitions InformationThe majority of material in the Zeno P. Metcalf Entomology Research Collection was given by Mrs. Z. P. (Mary Luella) Metcalf, Raleigh, N.C., in June 1956 (Accession no. 1956-0001). Additional materials donated by Carol Parron in 1982 (Accession no. 1982-0028), David Wray in 1998 (Accession no. 1998-0004), and Kathy Kidd in 2003 (Accession no. 2003-0002). ProcessingProcessed by: Andi Knecht & Sara Jane Bell ;machine-readable finding aid created by: Steven Mandeville-Gamble Scope and Content NoteThe majority of the Metcalf Entomology Research Collection consists of research materials pertaining to the scientific and
economic aspects of
insects, primarily of the Order
Homoptera. Originally funded by Smith College as a continuation of the General Catalogue of the Hemiptera and compiled by
Zeno Payne Metcalf (1885-1956), it was expanded upon Metcalf's death by Dr.
David A. Young and Dr.
Clyde F. Smith of the
North Carolina State University Department of Entomology, and by Virginia Wade Burnside, Research Supervisor and Department Librarian. The collection contains many rare books and
out-of-print monographs with numerous hand-illustrated plates. The research materials total approximately 11,000 monographs
and 1,150 volumes, incorporating original reprints, academic journals, photostatic copies and microfilm copies. Topics include
insect taxonomy,
morphology,
ecology, and
agricultural issues. An index to the research materials in the collection and additional information about cicadas, leafhoppers, planthoppers,
spittlebugs, and treehoppers may be found in
DrMetcalf: a resource on on cicadas, leafhoppers, planthoppers, spittlebugs, and treehoppers Additional items housed in the collection consist of correspondence relating to the long career and varied professional interests of Zeno Payne Metcalf. Letters refer to his interests in developing curricula in the School of Agriculture and Life Sciences of North Carolina State College; developing his collection on the Homoptera; his personal communication with many colleagues in the United States and abroad; and his community involvement. He had evidently intended to include biographical notes on the entomologists represented in his Bibliography and collected this information but did not publish it. A series of letters from Byrle Osborn display Metcalf's concern for ecological issues and his desire to see that controversial topics are voiced and debated publicly. The long lists of his publications and the clubs and organizations of which he was a member reveal the extraordinary amounts of time and energy Metcalf reserved for his professional activities. Biographical NoteZeno Payne Metcalf (1885-1956) was born in Lakeville, Ohio and was educated at Ohio State University. He received his A.B. degree in 1907 and came to North Carolina as Assistant Entomologist for the North Carolina Department of Agriculture in 1908. He joined the faculty of N.C. State College in 1912 as Head of the Department of Zoology and Entomology, a position he held until 1950. He attended Harvard University and was awarded the degree of Sc.D. in 1925. From 1923 until 1944 he served as Director of Instruction for the School of Agriculture and Life Sciences; from 1940 until 1943 was Director of Graduate Studies at N.C. State College; and from 1943 to 1950 was Associate Dean of the Graduate School of the Consolidated University. Metcalf retired from administrative duties in 1950 but continued to work as a research professor of entomology from 1950 until his death in 1956. For most of his career Metcalf was dedicated to compiling and cataloguing his vast library of research materials relating to the Insect Order Homoptera, and was working on the General Catalogue of the Homoptera of the World, the 42-volume index to his collection, until the day he died. He married Mary Luella Correll in 1909 and had a daughter, Katherine (Mrs. Micou Browne). Controlled Terms
