Scope and Content Note

The Milton M. Leonard Papers contain research files, medical pamplets, catalogs, animal x-rays, business correspondences, animal vendor catalogs, NCSU vet school catalogs, and black and white photos relating to Dr. Leonard's work as a veterinarian in Asheville, North Carolina. Materials range in dates from 1931-1990.

Biographical Note

Dr. Milton Moot Leonard was born in Newfield, New York, in 1893. He received his doctorate in veterinary medicine from Cornell Veterinary College currently known as The College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University, in 1913. Soon after receiving his degree he opened a veterinary practice in Asheville, North Carolina, in 1914.

Active in veterinary circles, he became the president of the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (NCVMA) in 1917, and served in every office of the association. He became the grand old man among North Carolina’s veterinarians and they affectionately called him “Pappy Leonard.” In 1957 Dr. Leonard was named Veterinarian of the Year by the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (NCVMA). He was a member of the American and Southern States Veterinary Medical Associations, American Animal Hospital Association, and the Piedmont and North Carolina State Veterianarian Associations. In 1978, Dr. Leonard was awarded the Distinguished Veterinarian Award by the NCVMA.

He praticed for more than twenty-six years and attended twenty-six national conventions of veternarians. Dr. Leonard died in October 1984 at the age of ninety-one in Asheville, North Carolina.
