            <abstract id="ref2" label="Abstract">The majority of the collection consists of notebooks and textbooks of Ralph Robertson Powell's when he was a student in the North Carolina State College School of Textiles (later North Carolina State University College of Textiles) from 1932 to 1936. A fabric analysis workbook, and note pages on fabric structure, dyeing, and other textiles subjects are included. Also included are materials relating to Powell's involvement in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) and a loom machine manual authored by Powell and published by Cannon Mills in 1955.</abstract>

            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Ralph Robertson Powell, from Raleigh, North Carolina, was a student in the North Carolina State College School of Textiles (later North Carolina State University College of Textiles) from 1932 to 1936. During his time at North Carolina State College Morrison was involved in a number of extracurricular activities, including the Tompkins Textile Society, the Sigma Tau Sigma fraternity, the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC), and boxing.</p>

            <head>Scope and Content Note</head>
            <p>The majority of the collection consists of notebooks and textbooks of Ralph Robertson Powell's when he was a student in the 
                <corpname>North Carolina State College School of Textiles</corpname> (later North Carolina State University College of Textiles) from 1932 to 1936. A 
                <subject>fabric analysis</subject> notebook contains detailed analyses of hundreds of fabrics, most of which are accompanied by a sample of the fabric analyzed. Also included are two typed textbooks, one on 
                <subject>dyeing</subject> and one on 
                <subject>fabric structure</subject>, each with handwritten notes throughout. The dyeing textbook also contains several colored yarn samples. Miscellaneous notes and typed textbook pages on various textile-related subjects are also included.</p>
            <p>The collection also contains material relating to Powell's involvement in the 
                <corpname>Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC)</corpname> at State College, including drill schedules and memoranda, as well as an letter of appointment at the United States Military Academy at West Point. The collection also contains draft and final versions of a loom manual authored by Powell and published by Cannon Mills.</p>
