Sue C. Carroll served as matron, the first female officer of the university. The matron supervised the Cadet Hospital (student health) and dormitories.

At the July 5, 1899 meeting, the Board of Trustees voted 9 to 6 "that the College and in all departments of study, teaching and lectures be open to women."

At their August 2, 1899 meeting they decided to admit women only as special students, except in the School of Textiles, where they could be regularly enrolled.
