John Obadiah Westwood, 1805-1893. The Cabinet of Oriental Entomology; Being a Selection of Some of the Rarer and More Beautiful Species of Insects, Natives of India and the Adjacent Islands, the Greater Portion of Which are Now for the First Time Described and Figured. London: W. Smith, 1848. Victorians showed great interest in exotic locations. Perhaps, as Donovan suggested, they had an interest in the British colonies. This, combined with the appeal of science, led to the popularity of volumes such as Westwood's The Cabinet of Oriental Entomology and other works in this exhibit. |
