Fein grew up in New York and began his career at the Journal American. He taught himself how to take pictures and began to do freelance work. Later, he worked as a staff photographer at the Herald Tribune. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, Fein returned to the Tribune, when he took the Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph of Babe Ruth's final public appearance two month's before Ruth's death. It is considered on of the best sports photos ever taken. Fein also worked for Look, Life, and other magazines. He won many awards and photographed individuals such as Harry Truman, Albert Einstein, and Eleanor Roosevelt. After the Herald Tribune folded in 1966, Fein joined Orange and Rockland Utilities. He is retired but still takes photographs.
