Beyond symbolic math; an overview of new Wolfram Language based tools for Librarians, Educators and Researchers
Dr. Daavid Vaananen will present his reflections from this year's Wolfram Summer School with an overview of tools for Science, Technology and Educational Innovation. Two citizen science projects under development will be discussed: a plant identification project with a web deployable user interface that incorporates machine learning for image recognition and a connected community garden project utilizing a Raspberry Pi powered gardening system, automatically integrated with a computable open access data repository. These projects apply computational thinking to empower local communities and provide educational opportunities towards acquiring higher level skills related to emerging technologies.

About the Speaker
Daavid has passion for advancing humanity through personalized education applying evidence based decision making and innovative technology tools. During his undergraduate studies at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland, his Ph.D. in theoretical astrophysics from Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris, France, and subsequent post-doctoral research at North Carolina State University in the United States, he has applied numerical model building and advanced quantitative/qualitative data analysis methods on a variety of scientific and educational projects adaptable for all ages. In collaboration with non-profit organizations, such as TEACH (Towards Educating America’s CHildren, primarily operating in rural areas of Guatemala), he has applied his expertise outside of academia and contributed to improving accessibility to high quality education worldwide while addressing demographic and geographic challenges. Among other things, he is also a certified group fitness instructor and has volunteered as a teaching assistant for Y.O.G.A. for Youth, a non-profit organization providing urban youth with tools of self discovery that foster hope, discipline and respect for self, others and community. Whenever possible he also enjoys rock climbing, gardening and other outdoor activities.
