Coffee & Viz - Understanding Human Perception through Immersive Virtual Environments

The experience of Immersive Virtual Environments (IVEs) is the next best thing to “being there.” For environmental design researchers, the realism and sense of presence provided by IVEs are invaluable for understanding human perceptions, preferences, and emotions in response to different environments. At this Coffee & Viz event, a research team from NC State’s Center for Geospatial Analytics will present an overview of IVE technology and describe its uses for environmental design research. They will share their own studies that used photo-realistic representations of actual and manipulated urban, agricultural, and natural environments to systematically collect data on a range of human perceptions, including feelings of safety and psychological well-being.

After the introductory seminar beginning at 9:30am in the Teaching and Visualization Lab, a hands-on demonstration of IVE applications will begin at 10:15 am in the Creativity Studio.

Payam Tabrizian is a Ph.D. student in the College of Design and a research assistant at the Center for Geospatial Analytics. Dr. Perver Baran is a teaching associate professor at the Center for Geospatial Analytics and affiliated faculty in the Ph.D. in Design Program at the College of Design. Makiko Shukunobe is a research associate at the Center for Geospatial Analytics. Saeed Ahmadi Oloonabadi is a Ph.D. student in the College of Design.
