Rights of the Copyright Holder

The copyright holder has the following exclusive rights:
1. To reproduce the work
2. To prepare derivative works
3. To distribute copies of the work
4. To publicly perform the work
5. To publicly display the work directly or by telecommunication
6. To publicly perform a sound recording by digital transmission

These are exclusive rights. If the copyright statute ended at this point, permission to exercise any of these rights would be required before any use could be made of the copyrighted work. However, the copyright statute, in its balancing act, goes on to place limitations on these exclusive rights, many in favor of nonprofit educational uses.
