Services Overview
The Data Services Librarian for Numeric Data is available to help faculty and students who are conducting research and teaching with numeric data sets. This includes such support as identifying and acquiring numeric data sets; identifying and creating teaching tools and course materials; conducting class orientations for specific databases or tools; individual consulting about research projects; individual tutorials for specific tools (by appointment only); consulting about software problems; and conducting custom cross-tabulations in the Census Bureau’s Advanced Query System.
Feel free to print copies of these flyers for departmental meetings or student orientations.
The NCSU Libraries also sponsors the library_data listserv as a forum for sharing information about numeric data research.
Software and Workstations
NC State students and personnel can request their own free copies of SAS software using this online form. Read the form carefully! Some versions of SAS will not run on certain operating systems and the notes will indicate alternatives.
All workstations in the Unity labs supply SAS through the Math and Statistics folder, as well as other analysis software like MATLAB and Maple.
College-specific computer labs may offer other statistical softwares like SPSS or Stata. Check with individual labs for specific information. For instance, the CHASS labs supply SPSS as well as SAS.
Instruction & Assistance On Campus
Every spring and fall, the Department of Statistics' SAS Consulting Office staff teach a SAS Short Course over a four-week period. The class focuses on the latest version of SAS and topics covered usually include:
- Writing SAS programs
- SAS Display Manager
- SAS data sets versus non-SAS data sets
- Programming in the DATA step
- Procedures: PLOT, UNIVARIATE, MEANS, FREQ, REG, ANOVA, GLM
This non-credit course is open to all faculty, staff, and students and there
are no fees associated with the course. Registration is
required. An email announcement is made on the ncsu-sas-users listserv at the start of each semester. (To subscribe go to http://www.stat.ncsu.edu/sas/ncsu-sas-users.html.) Class registration is limited and the course is popular so try to register as soon as a course is announced.
The Information Technology Division (ITD) of the University's Computing Services offers several short SAS workshops. See their course listings for descriptions and dates.
The CHASS IT department offers short workshops on SPSS for CHASS students and personnel. Its Training web page lists current classes.
Individualized assistance in D. H. Hill Library is offered by appointment and is also available via email or telephone. Contact Michele Hayslett, Librarian for Data Services and Government Information, D. H. Hill Library, at 513-4433 or by e-mail at michele_hayslett@ncsu.edu.
Researchers may post technical questions or start discussions about data issues on the library_data listserv.
