ONLINE Tools

Online applications for a variety of disciplines that enable analysis or data manipulation without the use of special software.

These are offered as possibly useful in class since they can be used without downloading special software, but see also Research Tools.

Physical/Life Sciences | Social Sciences

Bioconductor
http://www.bioconductor.org/

Open source package with a very rich collection of tools for analysis and comprehension of genomic data.

NCBI Tools for Data Mining
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Tools/

Wide array of tools for nucleotide sequence analysis, protein sequence analysis and proteomics, structures, genome analysis and gene expression, as well as tools for programmers.

The Scriptome [Harvard University]
http://sysbio.harvard.edu/csb/resources/computational/scriptome

Set of tools that filter, format, and merge data in tabular or common biological formats. Use single tools to take a quick look at data, or string tools together in a "protocol" to explore the data more deeply. Available for Mac as well as Windows systems.

World Federation for Culture Collections' Databases by Culture Collections and Cell Banks (World Data Centre for Microorganisms [WDCM])
http://wdcm.nig.ac.jp/

From the web site: "The WFCC is a Multidisciplinary Commission of the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS) and a Federation within the International Union of Microbiological Societies (IUMS). The WFCC is concerned with the collection, authentication, maintenance and distribution of cultures of microorganisms and cultured cells. Its aim is to promote and support the establishment of culture collections and related services, to provide liaison and set up an information network between the collections and their users... and [to] work to ensure the long term perpetuation of important collections."

"WFCC-MIRCEN World Data Centre for Microorganisms (WDCM) provides a comprehensive directory of culture collections, databases on microbes and cell lines, and the gateway to biodiversity, molecular biology and genome projects."

"The WFCC (through the activities of Professor Skerman, University of Queensland, Australia, and his colleagues in the 1960's) pioneered the development of an international database on culture resources worldwide. The result is the WFCC World Data Center for Microorganisms (WDCM). This data resource is now maintained at National Institute of Genetics (NIG), Japan and has records of nearly 476 culture collections from 62 countries. The records contain data on the organisation, management, services and scientific interests of the collections. Each of these records is linked to a second record containing the list of species held."

International Association for Social Science Information Service and Technology (IASSIST) Toolbox
http://www.iassistdata.org/tools/

A collection of scripts, programs, etc. created by members. The UK Data Archive "tools comprise a variety of utilities for generating, managing, manipulating and converting social survey data and metadata files," including one to convert SPSS files to Stata format.

Online Analysis Using the Data Analysis Systems (DAS) [ICPSR]
http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/access/sda.html

(social science data analysis) From the Web site: "DAS enables users to perform online analysis directly over the Web without downloading files. This is especially useful for users who do not have statistical software installed on their current workstation. In addition, DAS enables users to create and download subsets of data collections. ICPSR currently offers DAS components for over 200 different studies...

Online data analysis is recommended for users who would like to:

  • Search for variables of interest in a dataset
  • Review frequencies or summary statistics of key variables to determine what further analyses are appropriate
  • Review frequencies or summary statistics for missing data
  • Produce simple summary statistics for reports
  • Create statistical tables from raw data
  • Create a subset of cases or variables from a particularly large collection to save time in downloading and space on a personal computer."

Survey Documentation & Analysis (SDA) [UC-Berkeley]
http://sda.berkeley.edu/

Archive of tools for the included social science surveys. Crosstabulation, the comparison of means, the comparison of correlations and other analysis programs are available online. Another procedure available in the Web archive allows users to generate and download a subset of many of the data files in the archive. In addition to generating the data file, the subset procedure produces a codebook for the subset and data definitions for SAS, SPSS, Stata and DDI (XML).
