MANAGING YOUR LITERATURE CITATIONS:
Consider using a bibliographic management software tool, such as RefWorks,
to manage your literature collection.
Setting up alerts in Genomics & Proteomics
Alerts are a good way to keep up-to-date with the literature through
the provision of regular email content. Two types of alerts are available.
- Table of Contents (TOC) alerts provide the TOCs of specific journals
as soon as they are published.
- Topical (database search) alerts allow researchers to perform and save
searches on specific topics. The alert service then re-runs
the saved search at regular intervals (when the database is updated) and
sends the researcher any new results.
If the NCSU Libraries has a subscription to the online version of a journal,
these alerts will provide links to the full-text articles.
Many journal publishers and database vendors require you to register in
order to use their alert services.
Journals and Table of Contents Alerts
My
Alerts
The NCSU Libraries' My
Alerts service
allows you to quickly and easily request to receive email messages containing
the current tables of contents for many of the most popular NCSU Libraries'
journal titles.
For each title to which you subscribe in My Alerts, you will
receive an email when a new issue is published. The body of the email will
consist of the table of contents from the journal’s
website. Links to full text of articles will be provided when available.
Alerts from Other Publishers
Many publishers, including scienitific societies, now offer electronic TOC
alerts for their journals. A few large publishers, who publish many genomics
related journals are listed below with the journals they publish and a link
to register for alerts (where available).
However--in many cases, especially for single titles from individual publishers,
it is probably simplest to use My
Alerts to select multiple titles or
the library Journal
List to go to the individual journal/publisher
web site for the specific journal for which you want an alert.

Databases and Search Alerts
The table below lists databases that cover genomics and related topics,
and provides comments or instructions for setting up saved searches.
Note that for the search alert services you must register to create a personal
account in each database.
Once you are registered, begin by performing
a search in the database. If this is a search you want to save, follow the
instructions below to begin the saved search proces. Then follow the detailed
instructions on the database screens to finish setting up your alerts.
| Databases (and Vendor Interface) |
Instructions for Alerts |
| Agricola and CAB
Abstracts
(EBSCO Host interface) |
On the search results page, click on the "Alert/Save/Share" link
at the upper right of the results list and select Create an Alert.
On the next page, fill in the forms to finalize the alert. |
Web
of Science, Biosis,
and Zoological Record
(Web of Knowledge) |
Click in the box at the top of the page that says "Search History." Then
click on the button "Save History." Note: This will only save your
most recent search statement. |
| PubMed (National
Library of Medicine ) |
To the right of the main search box is a button that says "Clear" and
next to that a "Save search" link. |
