Indexes to Journal Articles

The two indexes listed below will provide the most comprehensive indexing focusing on historical and area studies journals.

Historical Abstracts
Index to scholarly journal articles in history journals covering the time period 1450 to the present, and focusing on regions outside the U.S. and Canada. Index goes back to 1969.

Bibliography of Asian Studies
Indexes primarily western-language articles and book chapters on all parts of Asia published since 1971.

The following indexes are broader in scope, but will include some information on Japanese history.

Readers' Guide Retrospective
Index to the most popular general-interest periodicals published in the United States reflecting the history of 20th century America. Coverage includes the years 1890 through 1982. This is a good database to use for finding primary sources reflecting Japan-related discussion in popular media.

Los Angeles Times (via ProQuest Historical Newspapers)
Provides fully searchable electronic access to the Los Angeles Times from 1881-1987. Includes full image of the actual newspaper articles. Illustrations and advertisements are included.

New York Times (via ProQuest Historical Newspapers)
Provides fully searchable electronic access to the New York Times from 1857-2003. Includes full image of the actual newspaper articles. Illustrations and advertisements are included.

Humanities and Social Sciences Retrospective
Index to some of the best-known scholarly journals and numerous lesser-known but important specialized magazines. Coverage includes a wide range of interdisciplinary fields covered in a broad array of humanities and social sciences journals. Dates covered: 1907 - 1984

Web of Science
Allows for combined searching of Arts and Humanities Citation Index as well as Social Science Citation Index. In addition to the general search capability, which allows for keyword searching of articles by topic, you can also use the cited reference search feature to locate articles that cited an article of interest.

JSTOR
Full text archive of selected academic journals. For included journals, most go back to the earliest issues published. Allows for keyword searching across all included journals in a discipline.

Many topics may be interdisciplinary, and thus benefit from indexes in other subject areas. To find indexes covering different subject areas, use the Databases list, which allows you to identify indexes in broad subject categories.
