HI 251 : Early American History

Course Instructor: Stephen Middleton
Librarian: Cindy Levine

This guide is designed to help you find materials for the bibliography assignment.

The new version of the NCSU Libraries Catalog makes it easier to focus your search, and narrow down to different types of materials. For many of these questions, you might start by entering your topic, then use the refinements on the left side of the screen to narrow your results..

Use the links on the left side of this screen for suggested search strategies for individual questions.

Copy of Assignment (from Dr. Middleton) follows:

Projects : No assignment should go beyond the scope of the course, which is 1865.

Project I. Bibliography: In order to be successful when undertaking a research project, an investigator needs to know where and how to find sources. This exercise is designed to make students use the library to learn about various historical sources and how to find them. For this exercise, students will prepare and type a bibliography including the material listed below. Each entry should be in standard bibliographic form. Also, the title for this work should be as follows, Early American History: A Bibliography. Please take note that merely copying titles from the on-line catalog in the library is often confusing. Students are expected to go to the stacks to verify that their sources are appropriate. A successful project will have each of the following entries presented in a suitable format. Moreover, each section in the bibliography requires a one-paragraph annotation. A style sheet for formatting is attached to this syllabus as a guide for compiling the bibliography. Additional directions will be given in class. On-line sources are in appropriate for our work in this class. You may use the Internet for enrichment, but do not cite a URL as a bibliographic resource.

1. Introduction: The bibliography will include a single-spaced paragraph that summarizes the topic of their research. Students should make a concerted effort to understand what he or she has compiled, and be able to tell the reader about its relevance to doing historical research.
