An annual index to current scientific literature, beginning with 1901 and ending with 1914. Early issues contain author and subject indexes. Later issues contain title, subject, and systematic indexes.

Please note that the NCSU Libraries will not have some of the journals indexed by these indexes and abstracts. To see if we have the journal you need, use the NCSU Libraries catalog to search for the journal title (not the title of the article).

Finding Books

Locate books by using the online catalogs for the NCSU Libraries or NCCU, UNC-CH, and Duke University libraries. Workstations in the D. H. Hill Library are located on the first floor, the ground floor Reading Room, and bookstack tower. You may also access the catalogs from your own office or home computer.

You can search for books by author, title, subject, and keyword.

Standardized subject headings are used for subject searches. For example, to find books about entomology, use the following subject headings:

  • Beetles -- Classification
  • Entomology
  • Insects
  • Insects -- Classification
  • Insects -- Identification
  • Insect pests
  • Insect pests -- Control

You can also search for groups of or individual insects, using scientific or common names. For example:

  • Clearwing moths
  • Monarch butterfly
  • Papilionidae
  • Dendroctonus
  • Dendroctonus frontalis
  • Southern pine beetle

If you know the title of a relevant book, you can search this title in the online catalog, look at the subject headings used to index it, and then search those subject headings for related books on the topic.

If the NCSU Libraries does not have the book or journal that you need, you can do one of the following:

  1. Fill out an Interlibrary Loan request through Tripsaver. (Ask at the Reference Desk for assistance.) Through the Tripsaver service, books and articles from Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill and NCCU can be obtained within 2-3 days. Books and articles from other institutions will take longer to obtain.

  2. Check out books from Duke, NCCU, or UNC-Chapel Hill.

NCSU students, faculty, and staff are eligible for borrowing privileges at the libraries of three other major universities in the Triangle--Duke University, NC Central University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, all members of the Triangle Research Libraries Network. A valid NCSU ID is required to establish privileges when visiting another TRLN library. You may also be asked to access profile information in your NCSU library account (i.e.,"My Borrowing Record") using a PIN number. The list of participating libraries and information such as hours of operation, directions, and circulation policies is available on the TRLN Web site. It is best to check this page for the policies of the library you are visiting before making a trip there.
