Nomenclature Sources
- Nomenclatural
Glossary for Zoology (http://www.biosis.org/support/glossary/)
"This
glossary is based on a text intended to aid indexers in the
production of nomenclatural entries for the Zoological Record,
the index to world zoological literature published by BIOSIS
and the Zoological Society of London. It covers terminology
commonly encountered within publications dealing with the systematics
and nomenclature of animals."
-
Index to
Organism Names (http://www.organismnames.com/query.htm)
Gives "basic
nomenclatural and hierarchy information, plus ZR volume occurrence
counts (reflecting use in the literature) for animal names;
and links to other organizations' data for non-animal names.
It can be used to identify the taxonomic group to which a
named organism belongs and to link to further information
from ZR or other collaborating organizations."
- Universal Biological Indexer and
Organizer
Information about organisms is often linked to a name. This can
create problems in information retrieval because: 1) One taxon
can have many names and 2) the same name can refer to many taxa. uBio
is working on tools for providers of biological information that address
these problems. uBio project also includes NameBank, which is a repository
of millions of recorded biological names and facts that link those names
together, and ClassificationBank, which stores multiple classifications
and taxonomic concepts that are the result of expert opinions.
- Integrated Taxonomic Information
System (ITIS)
Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) - ITIS supplies authoritative
taxonomic information on plants, animals, fungi, and microbes of North America
and the world. They are a partnership of U.S., Canadian, and Mexican agencies
(ITIS-North America); other organizations; and taxonomic specialists. ITIS
is also a partner of Species 2000 and the Global Biodiversity Information
Facility (GBIF)
- Nomenclator Zoologicus. 9 v. DH Hill Ref QL354 .N4
Published
by the Zoological Society of London, Nomenclator
Zoologicus "is a continuous record of the bibliographical
origins of the names of every genus and subgenus
in zoology published since the 10th edn of Linnaeus' Systema
Naturae in
1758. The main work Vols. 1-4 (A-Z, about 225,000 entries)
covers the period 1758-1935. Supplementary Vols. 5 (1936-1945,
over 18,000 entries), 6 (1946-1955, over 19,000 entries),
7 (1956-1965, over 21,000 entries), 8 (1966-1977, over 30,000
entries) and 9 (1978-1994, over 45,000 entries) should be
consulted in conjunction with previous volumes. Volume 9
was produced in association with BIOSIS UK with new names
automatically extracted from the Zoological Record database."

Finding Journal Articles
If a topic is too current or too specific to be covered by a handbook,
encyclopedia, or book, it may be discussed in journal articles, research
reports, or conference papers. Access to this literature has traditionally
been through indexing and abstracting services. There is no universal
index that covers all the published information in entomology, so
at times you may have to consult several sources.
Electronic Databases
Electronic databases provide comprehensive searching of indexes or
articles via the computer. Searching these databases is faster and
often more complete since subject terms can be combined to locate
a topic.
To search these databases, use the computer workstations
located in D.H. Hill Library or one of the branch libraries.
Many of these databases can be searched from off campus via the
NCSU
Libraries Proxy Server. You will need a Unity account to login.
Unity computing accounts (or Eos accounts for Engineering students)
are automatically generated for all students, faculty and staff at
NC State. If you do not know what your Unity login is, go to NCSU
Computing Resources'
Unity/Eos Help Page.
The databases that index articles about entomology are listed below.
Use one or more of the databases to search for references to journal
articles. These articles may include a summary or abstract of the
article, but they do not usually have the full text of the article.
To read the journal articles you have identified, use the
NCSU Libraries catalog to find out if the NCSU Libraries has the journal; search for the journal title (not the title of the article). Use the Journals List to locate electronic or print versions of the journal that you need. Articles not available via the Journals List may still be obtained through the Tripsaver service.
Agriculture and Life Sciences databases.
To search one of these databases, go to the Databases list. Then select a subject--Example: Entomology.
You'll see a long list of databases from which to choose.
-
Zoological Record (NCSU only)
Provides the most comprehensive coverage of worldwide animal literature. Over 6,500 international journals, review annuals, monographs, meeting proceedings, books and reports are monitored for inclusion. All major areas of zoology are represented, including: behavior, ecology, evolution, habitat, nutrition, parasitology, reproduction, taxonomy, and zoogeography. Coverage: 1978-present. Updated monthly.

Record.
-
AGRICOLA
(via EBSCOhost) (NCSU only)
Agriculture and related literature indexed by the National Agricultural
Library (NAL). Indexes journals, books, theses, patents, software,
audiovisual materials, technical reports, and agricultural experiment
station reports held by the NAL. Coverage: 1970- present.
Note: AGRICOLA via the National
Agricultural Library (http://agricola.nal.usda.gov/) is available
to the public. Coverage: 1970-present. Updated daily.
NAL Agricultural Thesaurus (http://agclass.nal.usda.gov/agt/agt.shtml)
Use the Journals
Indexed in AGRICOLA (JIA) database (http://www.nal.usda.gov/catalog/jia.shtml)
to find the full title for the journal abbreviation found in AGRICOLA.
Note: you must include punctuation marks in your search. For example,
to find out if Ecol. entomol. is indexed in AGRICOLA,
search for Ecol. entomol. (not Ecol entomol) in Abbreviated
Title.
-
BIOSIS Previews (Biological Abstracts) (NCSU only)
Issued as a part of the ISI Web of Knowledge, the database covers original research reports and reviews in biological and biomedical areas. Coverage includes traditional areas of biology such as botany, zoology, and microbiology, as well as related fields such as biomedical, agriculture, pharmacology, and ecology. Also included are interdisciplinary fields such as medicine, biochemistry, biophysics, bioengineering, and biotechnology. Database features and search tips.
Please note that the NCSU Libraries will not have some of the journals
indexed by these databases. To see if we have the journal you need,
use the NCSU Libraries catalog
to search for the journal title (not the title of the
article).
Satellite Shelving Facility. Sometimes, the catalog
record will state that the book or journal you need is located at
the NCSU Libraries' Satellite Shelving Facility. You can request
the item(s) by logging on to the Tripsaver request system and filling out a Satellite Request Form. (Go to the Reference Desk for assistance.) Many
requested items can be delivered the same day as requested. See
Requesting Materials for details.
Even if the library does not have a subscription to a particular
journal, you may be able to access the journal electronically. Use
the Journals List to find specific electronic journals by title.
