Tips Concerning Journal Article Databases

1.  Don't lock yourself in:

* Choose the best database(s) for your topic.
* Don't rely solely on Communication and Mass Media Complete.
* Use the Databases link to identify other appropriate databases.

2.  Pick the best terms to search:

* Choose words and phrases that best describe the topic.
* Consider alternative words or phrases as synonyms.
* Different databases may use different terms.
* Look for a Thesaurus or Index.
* Move from Keywords to Subject terms.

3.  Build on simple searches:

* Build complex searches in discrete pieces.
* Focus several simple searches using a combination of terms.
* Use a database's "Combine sets" feature, if it has such.

4.  Look for the best articles:

* Distinguish between Scholarly and Popular articles.
* Don't worry initially where the text is.
* Don't overlook good articles because they aren't immediately available.
* Finding full-text of an article can be a complex process.
* Plan ahead and use Tripsaver/Interlibrary Loan.

5.  If you get stuck, Ask for help:

* AskaLibrarian - via phone, email, chat, or visit the library.
