Scholarly Journals vs Popular Magazines

A lot of periodical literature is published, in print and on the Internet. The Ulrich's Periodical Directory lists more than 200,000 currently issued periodicals worldwide.

They aren't all of equal value to researchers, and there are a couple of different periodical types that you'll find. Selecting the most appropriate periodical titles is the first step in identifying the best research articles on your topic.

There are several characteristics that help you distinguish between popular magazines and scholarly journals. A third category, trade publications, falls somewhere between the magazine and journal types.

There's a Scholarly vs. Popular Materials Guide among the NCSU Libraries webpages that compares magazines, journals and trade publications side by side.
