Hazardous Properties
- Sigma-Aldrich Library of Chemical Safety
Data
D. H. Hill Reference T55.3 .H4 S54
This sources contains the following data: physical properties and
molecular structure, toxicity, health hazards, incompatibility,
decomposition, and handling. The compounds are listed in order by chemical
name. The toxicity
column gives the RTECS #, if available. The volumes contain a molecular
formula index, CAS number index, Aldrich catalog number index, and a Sigma
product number index.

- Merck Index - abbreviated
Merck in Aldrich Catalog
D. H. Hill Reference RS51 .M4
- Consult "Cross Index" to locate compound.
2,4-Dintro-1-fluorobenzene see
4101.
- Entry-numbered section gives the following information:
- Sax's Dangerous Properties of Industrial
Materials
D. H. Hill Reference T55.3 .H3 L494 and online
- Sigma-Aldrich Library of Regulatory and
Safety Data
D. H. Hill Reference T55.3 H3 S55
Use CAS Number index or Aldrich Catalog to obtain entry number.
For example 2,4-Dintrofluorobenzene (CAS number 70-34-8) is entry 1587E.
The entry starts on page 1587 and continues across to page 1588. It is
row E on the page. See the volume itself for the arrangement.
The entry for each chemical includes the following information:
- Chemical name, cas number, and data source
- Regulatory information: including TSCA status (USA) and
EINECS number (Europe)
- Phyicial data: includes boiling point, melting point, flash
point, explosion limits, and density.
- Toxicity and health hazards: including OSHA exposure limits,
RTEC number, acute health hazards, chronic health hazards, and target
organs
- Handling, storage, and additional information.
- Sax's Dangerous Properties of Industrial
Materials
D. H. Hill Reference T55.3 .H3 L494
- ChemIDplus
Available through the NIH and NLM. Do NOT use CAS numbers to search here (since NIH is somethine of a competitor to the Chemical Abstracts
Service, they use their own ID system). Try using common names or formulae, but make sure you're
examining the right chemical. After finding your chemical, try the "toxicity" link.
- NCSU MSDS Management System
Collection of over 500,000 material safety data sheets for chemical products.
For more information on MSDS at NC State see
http://www.ncsu.edu/ehs/MSDS.htm.
- Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical
Substances (RTECS)
Microforms Center HE.20.7112/3: (located in the Media Center, second floor,
West Wing of D. H. Hill Library)
Use the latest quarterly cumulation. The introductory pages of the
microfiche (or Dangerous Properties of Industrial
Materials) explain the
abbreviations and measurements. Chemicals are listed in order by RTECS #.
The information given is mostly biological activity and biological
hazards, but
also includes molecular formula, molecular weight and some synonyms.
In addition to data given below, an RTECS entry may also contain the
following:
skin & eye irritation, reproductive effects, tumorigenic data, review,
standard & regulations, and status.
