BUS 530: Managing People in the High Tech Environment

Finding Books Using the Online Catalog

The subjects you will be discussing in this class are very timely, and even the most recently published books on those topics will lag behind what will be found in periodical, or journal, literature. But books can give you a good perspective from which to compare current developments in your area of interest.

The NCSU Libraries' catalog lists the books and journal titles held in all of the library locations on campus. You can search for books by author, title, subject, and keyword.

A set of standardized terms is used for subject searches in the catalog. For example, one very useful subject term in the catalog for you will be high technology industries. The group of persons who choose the terms used in the catalog prefer human capital instead of "human resources." A subject search for personnel management will locate a large number of books. Scope notes and further subdivisions of the above terms may help you identify a more precise term to use for your search.

If you know the title of a relevant book, you can search this title in the online catalog, look at what subject headings were used to index it, and then search those subject headings for additional books on the topic.

A second way to discover what subject terms have been chosen for use in the library's catalog is to do a keyword search, display the results, and examine the subject heading lines that appear in each record's display. Note any subject terms that interest you, and then use those terms to perform a subject search.

Remember that the online catalog allows you to search the library collections of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University. If you find books, or periodical articles, in other Triangle libraries that are not available here, the Interlibrary and Document Delivery Department's Tripsaver service can usually get them for you in three to four days. If material you need is not available in the Triangle, the staff in the same office will search for it more widely, but several weeks may pass before such an interlibrary loan request is successful.
