Census 2000
The federal government takes a decennial census, and for intervening years the bureau produces population estimates.
You can locate demographic data for small geographic units using Census data.
There are two census forms, short and long. The long forms are asked of about 17 percent of the population.

U.S. Economic Censuses
Every five years (in years ending in 2 and 7) the Census Bureau conducts a series of censuses focused on business activity grouped in 18 broad NAICS classifications.
Nation-wide data in the economic censuses is released for each covered industry.
Data for smaller geographic areas is also available, for state, county, and metropolitan areas.

State Data Centers
A directory of internet sites that have state-specific economic data.
State Data Centers are a cooperative venture between states and the Census Bureau.
North Carolina's SDC has a data server called LINC.

Department of Labor Statistics
The Bureau of Labor Statistics is the principal fact-finding agency for the Federal Government in the broad field of labor economics and statistics

Current Industrial Reports
"Since 1904, the Current Industrial Report (CIR) program has been providing monthly, quarterly, and annual measures of industrial activity. The primary objective of the CIR program is to produce timely, accurate data on production and shipments of selected products.
"These surveys measure manufacturing activity in important commodity areas such as textiles and apparel, chemicals, primary metals, computer and electronic components, industrial equipment, aerospace equipment, and consumer goods."

County Business Patterns
County Business Patterns is an annual series that provides state and county economic data by industry.
It has payroll and establishment data, the latter by very specific NAICS codes.

Zip Code Business Patterns
"ZIP Business Patterns presents business counts, by size, for hundreds of industries....plus summaries by ZIP code (without industry breakdown) for employment ..."
