Citation Indexing

Most scientific articles include a bibliography, or list of works cited. Such a listing allows you to go backwards in time to find other articles related to the topic of the article you are reading. Citation indexing uses these bibliographies to allow a researcher to follow a topic or article forward in time, by linking the article with other articles that have included the primary article in their bibliographies.

The web sites below describe citation indexing in greater detail. The primary database that performs citation indexing in the sciences is the Science Citation Index, also called the Web of Science. It is available at NCSU libraries through the link below.

This article describes some of the problems with using citation data, especially as a tool for evaluating scientists.
NCSU Libraries has online access to Nature, use the e-journal finder to locate "Nature (London)" to get to the Nature home page.

Web of Science
Science Citation Index Expanded, online database, covers over 5,300 journals in the sciences including the disciplines of agriculture, biology, chemistry, medicine, and veterinary science. This multidisciplinary database of bibliographic information is indexed so that you can search for specific articles by subject, author, journal, and/or author address. Because the information stored about each article includes the article's cited reference list (often called its bibliography), you can also search the databases for articles that cite a known author or work. Coverage: 1945-present.
