How to save to a USB drive on a Library workstation (silver Sun Ray)
- Insert your drive into the port on the right side of the computer, then use the USB Drive icon (looks like a pink CD).
Select "Open USB drive" from the pull-down menu. You may need to wait a few seconds for the drive to mount.
- Your USB drive should now appear as an option when opening or saving files using StarOffice or Firefox. USB drives
are not accessible in Internet Explorer (IE) or other Windows-based programs, such as SciFinder Scholar.
- To save in Firefox: After properly mounting your USB drive, it should appear as an option when
saving web pages or PDF files from Firefox. To save a webpage, click on the File drop-down menu and select
"Save as..." To save a PDF file, click on the "Save a Copy" button at the top left corner of
the document instead of the File menu option.
- To save in StarOffice: When saving documents created or edited in StarOffice, click on the File
menu and then select "Save As". Please be sure to double-check the file type, as the default file type is
only accessible using the StarOffice software. If you will need to open your file later using Microsoft
Office or WordPad, be sure to change the file type to a Microsoft Office document (e.g., .doc, .xls).
- Documents can also be saved temporarily in the default directories on the SunRays, then attached to Firefox e-mail
messages or moved to AFS space. This does not permanently save your documents to the
SunRays. Once you log out, all documents saved to the default directories are deleted.
- To remove the drive safely, click the USB Drive icon and select "Close USB drive."
