Firewall conflicts

Firewalls often block off-campus access to the Libraries' databases and e-journals.

The proxy server in use by NCSU Libraries uses individual port numbers to define the address of a specific resource, e.g. Electronic Journal or Database. These port numbers may be randomly reassigned during a restart of the proxy server. Because of this we cannot inform network administrators of the exact port number to allow access through a site firewall to a specific resource. Additionally, we do not recommend opening a large range of port numbers on a site-wide level.

If you are behind a firewall and require access to NCSU Libraries resources, your network administrator will need to create a firewall rule that specifies the NCSU Libraries' proxy server as a Trusted site. The address to use is: www.lib.ncsu.edu. Network administrators should be able to allow access to our entire proxy server port range via this address.

If you have questions regarding the configuration of your local firewall, please contact your network administrator. Network administrators requiring further information may contact the NCSU Libraries' Information Technology Helpdesk at (919) 515-2339.
