Expanding Online Only Journals At NCSU Libraries

Frequently Asked Questions on Moving to E-only Periodical Access

The online only initiative

Uncertain economic conditions, the state budget reductions, and continued price increases for journals and databases above standard inflation rates will severely impact the collections budget this year. In FY2009/2010 the NCSU Libraries collections budget will sustain a cut of $1.5 million – a 15% reduction from the 2008/2009 allocation. Under the guidance of the University Library Committee and in consultation with the NC State community the Libraries undertook a comprehensive review to prepare for these cuts.

Staff from the Libraries met with Departmental Library Representatives and University Library Committee in January to discuss approaches for managing these reductions. Both groups strongly endorsed the Libraries significantly increasing the number of electronic only journals to realize 5-10% savings on subscriptions. The Libraries is committed to the immediate and long-term viability of the collection for teaching and research and actively engages in international collaborative efforts to insure archive electronic journal subscriptions.

The ever increasing percentage of journals available electronically, the growing number of publishers offering price breaks for electronic only subscriptions, the predominance of electronic journal usage, and the extent of budget challenges for FY 2009/2010 necessitate the move of a number of journal subscriptions to electronic only. The Libraries will post updates on the process of moving titles to electronic only to this site. There is also an FAQ, available that addresses a number of potential questions about the overall process.
