Collection Management and Scholarly Communication

Collection Management and the NCSU Libraries Digital Scholarship and Publishing Center work in partnership to educate the University community about scholarly communication issues and to help foster competitive alternatives to current publishing models.

We have developed a short talk titled "Reclaiming Scholarship" which we are able to present to departments, research units, classes, or other groups or individuals at your request.

This presentation discusses the negative impact that the rising costs of journal subscriptions can have on faculty at academic institutions, and gives some recommendations for what faculty can do to help alleviate the problem. Association of Research Libraries Office of Scholarly Communication - This group has a number of resources available on issues of scholarly publishing, intellectual property, and copyright management. In particular, faculty might find the Principles for Emerging Systems of Scholarly Publishing ("The Tempe Principles") and Create Change: A Resource for Faculty and Librarian Action to Reclaim Scholarly Communication interesting.
SPARC: The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition - SPARC is a worldwide group of libraries, publishers, and other organizations involved in promoting the introduction of competitive alternatives into the scholarly communication system. These include the development of new journals as well as of other forms of scientific communication including databases and preprint servers. NC State University is an active member of SPARC.
The Triangle Research Libraries Network partnered with SPARC to develop Declaring Independence: A Guide to Creating Community-Controlled Science Journals. SPARC released the sequel to this guide, Gaining Independence: A Manual for Planning the Launch of a Nonprofit Electronic Publishing Venture in the spring of 2002.
