MARC21 basics

Fixed field and Leader

The fixed fields and leader provide the machine with easily addressed fields containing short codes of a fixed length which define elements such as the type of material described in the record (books, serials, graphic materials, music, computer files, etc.), the encoding level of the description (CIP, full level LC, minimal level), rules used, language of the piece, and so on. These are useful to OPAC users as qualifiers for their searches. USMARC presents the leader as the first 23 bytes of a record and the fixed fields as 001-008. There are no indicators nor subfields, even though OCLC presents 007 with the latter for ease of data entry. DRA, Unicorn, and OCLC present the leader and 008 fixed length fields in a block at the top of the MARC record with mnemonic tags to aid in data entry.

Variable data fields

The variable length fields are like memo fields within a MARC record. They are not so easily addressed as the fixed fields, but then they must be capable of enlarging or shrinking to fit the amount of data a work presents to the descriptive cataloger. This is where the author, publisher, title, paging, subjects and notes are presented.
  • All fields except 00x are variable data fields
  • Four levels of content designation
  • Field tags
    Indicators
    Subfield codes
    Field terminator
  • Grouped in blocks according to function:
  • 0XX = Control information, numbers, and codes
    1XX = Main entry
    2XX = Titles and title paragraph (title, edition, imprint)
    3XX = Physical description, etc.
    4XX = Series statements
    5XX = Notes
    6XX = Subject access fields
    7XX = Added entries other than subject or series; linking fields
    8XX = Series added entries, etc.
    9XX = Reserved for local implementation
  • Fields subject to authority control have parallels of content designation. The following meanings are generally given to the final two characters of the tag:
  • X00 = Personal names
    X10 = Corporate names
    X11 = Meeting names
    X30 = Uniform titles
    X40 = Bibliographic titles
    X50 = Topical terms
    X51 = Geographic names
