Changes to the Reference Collection due to East Wing Construction
Background
A construction project on the 1st floor of the D.H. Hill Library will see the Reference service desk
and materials temporarily relocated for a period of about twelve months. During the construction, the
Reference desk will be relocated to the Erdahl-Cloyd (West) wing, and a greatly reduced "ready reference"
collection will be kept close to staff, while most of the reference collection is temporarily housed on
the 3rd and 4th floors of the tower. Current plans for the refurbished Reference area call for a somewhat
reduced shelving capacity and for the elimination of the current "alcove" model which sees separate
subject-specific shelving sequences for business, law, census, and other materials. The new model will
merge all LC-classified print materials of less than 29 cm. in spine height into one sequence with Unicorn
location REF. Separate print sequences will be maintained for oversize materials, specific formats (microforms,
maps, posters, etc.), and for SuDoc-classified materials.
Temporary changes during the construction period
To identify items that are to be kept close to the Ref Desk during construction, a new location, REF-READY,
has been created. This location will be used for any titles that will revert to REF after construction, but
which will be kept close to the temporary Reference Desk until that time. As permanent Reference items
are identified for this temporary collection, they can be assigned to this code which will continue to display
as "Reference Material" in the OPAC until the move is initiated. In November/December, we will use Unicorn API
to change the locations REF-BUS and REF-LAW to REF-READY, as these locations will cease to exist after that time.
Please do not use REF-READY for Business or Law alcove materials until that time though, as otherwise these will
end up separated from the other Business and Law materials prematurely. REF-READY titles will be labeled as
"Ref.", both during the next 18 months and thereafter. We will probably use dots or tape on the spine to
differentiate Ready Ref from the 3rd/4th floor Reference collection.
Reference location table
This table represents Reference locations during the three stages of before, during, and after construction.
Note that some locations will be discontinued (REF-CENSUS, REF-GEOG, REF-IP, REF-LAW, REF-MICRO), while some
materials in some locations will be sent partially or wholly to STACKS. This will be updated as we hear of changes.
