Cataloging videorecordings : Feature films
Fixed fields
Ctry: Always use the code for the country of production (usually
transcribed in field 245|c), not the country of distribution or
release (field 260); if there are no statements of responsibility, assume
the country of publication to be that of the agency in the publication/distribution
area (field 260|a); use xx[blank] if the exact place of production is
unknown. Also use xx[blank] for unpublished titles.
Lang: code for the language of the sound track; code for the
predominant language for multilingual item.
- Example 1, a French film with English subtitle and sound track
in French:
- Lang: fre
- 041 1 fre|beng
- 500 French dialogue, English subtitle.
- 655 0 Feature films.
- 655 0 Feature films|zFrance.
- Example 2, a Spanish film with title proper in Spanish, parallel
title in English, and dubbed in English:
- Lang: eng
- 041 1 eng|hspa
- 245 00 Title proper in Spanish|h[videorecording] =|bEnglish parallel title
- 246 13 English parallel title
- 546 Dubbed in English.
- 655 0 Feature films.
- 655 0 Feature films|zSpain.
- For silent films, code for the language script of the printed title.
Time: record the total length (in minutes) of the video in 3 digits (right justified), e.g.
- Time: 075
- 300 1 videocassette (75 min.)
- Time: 180
- 300 2 videodiscs (90 min. each)
- If the actual length exceeds three digits, enter three zeros; if the length is unknown, use three hyphens.
Audience: use code value g for general interest.
Type_Mat: use code value v
Tech: use l for live action (most cases); use a for animation; use c for animation and live action.
Dat_Tp: always code for multiple dates: use p if the earlier date is known to be the year of production; use
t if the earlier date is known to be a copyright date of the motion picture.
Dates: the first date is the year of release (i.e. when the video became available), which is recorded in 260 $c;
the second date is the year of production (i.e. when the motion picture was made), which is recorded in the "Originally
released ... " note.
007 Code for physical description transcribed in field 300, e.g.
- 007 vfucbhou
- 300 1 videocassette (60 min.) :|bsd., col. ;|c1/2 in.
- 538 VHS.
- 007 vducgizu
- 300 1 videodisc (60 min.) :|bsd., col. ;|c12 in.
Variable-length fields
Publisher's number
Add publisher's number if present. This is usually found on the spine or back of the container or on the tape label.
- 028 42 DVD-E 660|bEros International
- 028 42 ONC030|bCriterion Collection
Title and statements of responsibility (AACR2r 7.1)
- 245 00 Title proper|h[videorecording]
:|bother title information /|cnames
of persons or corporate bodies with overall responsibilities, e.g.,
names of production company, directors, screenplay writers.
When names for performers, author, director, producer, etc. precede or
follow the title, do not transcribe them as part of the title proper, e.g.
- Title screen: Twentieth Century Fox presents Star wars
- Transcribe as:
- 245 00 Star wars
However,
- Title screens: Neil Simon's Seems like old times
- Transcribe as:
- 245 00 Neil Simon's Seems like old times
- 246 30 Seems like old times
Publications, distributions, etc. (AACR2r 7.4)
- 260 place of releasing agent/distributor (if cannot verify from
eye-readable information, generally accept what is supplied by the contributing
library) :|bname of the releasing agent/distributor (may not be
a subsidiary of the production company); look for words such as Home
Video in the name, |cdate of video release, or copyright
date for the video; choose the latest date if multiple dates are given;
disregard copyright date for the art work on the case cover.
If there are multiple records in OCLC for the title in hand, with the only
difference being the releasing agent and/or the date (most cases, the copyright
date), download the most "usable" record and edit it to match the
item in hand. Do not create a new record. This treatment is mostly analogous
to that of photocopy in books format. [Please note that many libraries
follow LCRI 1.4F6 to create separate records for different releasing agents
and dates]
Physical description (AACR2r 7.5)
For videocassette in VHS format:
- 306 011430
- 300 1 videocassette (75 min.) :|bsd.,
col. with b&w sequences ;|c1/2 in.
- Note: If you come across a videocassette in U-matic or Betamax
format, bring it to your supervisor's attention.
For DVD:
- 306 022015
- 300 1 videodisc (141 min.) :|bsd.,
col. ;|c4 3/4 in.
Notes (AACR2r 7.7)
System requirements
- Give the system used for a videorecording. For example:
- 538 VHS format.
- 538 DVD ; formatted for NTSC region 2.
Edition and history
- Give a note about the original film release. The original production
date is usually found on the cassette label or the case cover. For example:
- 500 Originally released as motion picture in 1964.
Cast
- List only leading actors and actresses. For example:
- 511 1 Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Robert Morley, Theodore Bikel.
- Note: Unlike DRA, Unicorn does have the ability to supply the print constant from the indicator value, thus
it is no longer necessary to supply the constant as part of the note.
Credits
- List other significant names not already mentioned elsewhere in the
record. Preface each name with a statement of function. Do not include
the names of assistants, associates, etc. For example:
- 508 Music, John Dankworth; camera, Gerry Fisher; editor, Reginald Beck.
Audience
- Record the rating of the film in field 521 if such information is available
from the case cover or cassette label. Delete this note from contributed
record if such information cannot be verified from eye-readable sources.
Summary
- Give a brief objective summary of the content of the film. Good sources
for summary information are the Internet Movie Database,
Video Source Guide, distributor's blurbs printed on the case cover, or the agency's web page.
Subject
- One standard genre heading, "Feature films" is assigned (in field
655, 2nd indicator value 0) to all titles cataloged following this
procedure. If additional genre term is needed, choose from the following
list. All terms are taken from LCSH. For example:
- 655 0 Feature films.

Call number
- All feature films, except Indo-Pakistani
(Bollywood) ones are classified under PN1997.99 and sub-arranged
by titles (use the regular LC Cutter table, with expansion if needed).
Use the video release date (260 |c) as the last element in the call number.
For example, the 1991 video release of the movie "Aguirre, the
wrath of God" will have the following call number:
- 090 PN1997.99|b.A38 1991
- Note: Motion picture rendition of literary works may be classified under
literary numbers if deemed appropriate.
Unicorn call number/copy attributes
- Standalone videorecordings (as opposed to accompanying
materials) generally are placed within MEDIA collections in each
branch, though this may change as space for these separate collections
diminishes. To enable shelving of A-V materials within STACK collections,
several new item types have been created, with an AC preface. Although
these were created expressly for A-V materials accompanying books, they
really only reflect a loan period which is consistent with books and
can be used for any media which are shelved and circulated like books.
- Please note that all video formats should be coded as VIDEO in Item cat1. This enables OPAC search filtering
for all videorecordings, regardless of format.
