Handling media materials

  1. Barcoding
  2. "For the items that are in the actual standard dvd cases, no matter how many cds or pamphlets or whatever are in there, please just barcode the case. We always check through the case itself when we get it back and make sure that it not only has the disc(s) or the video(s), but that it's (they) the right one(s) for the case. And if it's especially confusing, on some cases we stick a label on the case itself saying, "check for both discs" or whatever it needs. But I know some of our media stuff comes in weird boxes or funny little booklets without the dvd case; those may need to have every item barcoded separately. Also, if you can, please don't do whatever it is that makes that "check for accompanying materials" box pop open for the dvds; it's very helpful for the books with cds, but dvd cases aren't like books; we already know we have to check them over thoroughly, and people are likely to miss the pop-up and that screws up the check out or discharge." -- Karen DeWitt, Head, Design Library

  3. Access key
  4. Tape the access key (password for resource) to the case and type it in the item record as a Staff note.
