Rare books and special materials cataloging
Mission
The mission of the "Rare/Special Materials" group is to work with the NCSU Libraries' Special
Collections Research Center to provide bibliographic access for rare books and other special
collections materials at a level that meets the specialized needs of researchers as well as
the more broad needs of general users.
Cataloging of rare books and special materials
The purpose of rare book cataloging is to describe the copy in hand; this is important
for both identification purposes and patron interest.
All special collections materials will be cataloged in accordance with Anglo-American
Cataloging Rules, 2nd ed. Revised (AACR2r). Records will reflect full cataloging level
standards as outlined in AACR2r with additional descriptive and access points added.
Some material in Special Collections requires additional specific attention. These
materials will be cataloged in accordance with Descriptive Cataloging for Rare Books
(DCRB). Records will reflect full cataloging level standards as outlined in DCRB. Specific
procedures are outlined in the table below.
Any necessary research on a book will be done by the catalogers, with the aid of the
Special Collections Research Center. There
are many resources available to the Special Collections cataloger. See
Reference Sources.
