1901

Margaret Burke enrolled as the first female special student and took a course in physics.

This 1900-1901 catalog lists Margaret Clement Burke of Mocksville, N.C., as a special student attending the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now NC State University).

1901 - 1902

Eula Louisa Dixon took a course in dairying. She was the second female student to enroll at NC State. She was incorrectly identified as the first woman at NC State in George Ross's 1947 article about her. In 1899 Dixon became president of the Snow Camp Woolen Mill and managed a farm.

1902 - 1903

Adeline Stevens, the wife of Frank Lincoln Stevens, became the first woman faculty member. She was an instructor in biology from 1902-1903. Her name appeared in the 1902 - 1903 catalog list of faculty as an instructor in biology and zoology.

Adeline Stevens was a co-author with her husband, Frank Lincoln Stevens and Tait Butler, the president of the American Association of Farmers' Institute Workers, of A Practical Arithmetic, published by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1909.

 


1903 - 1904

List of special students including Miss Evelyn Byrd Lawrence of Raleigh studying ArchitectureBy the 1903 - 1904 academic year, there were more women on campus. Evelyn Byrd Lawrence of Raleigh took a course in architecture, Ivey Roberts of Raleigh took a course in drawing, and Frances Claire Stainback took courses in chemistry and English. This was the first year that women were listed as summer school students, and more than 200 women are listed as attending.
