Governor Terry Sanford (center) as he announced the appointment of James Allen Graham as Commissioner of Agriculture on July 29, 1964 succeeding the late Stag Ballentine. He was elected for the first time on November 3, 1964 and again in 1968, 1972, 1976, 1970, 1984, 1988, 1992 and 1996. This covered nine successful campaigns over more than 36 years.
